BURNABY, BC -- PMC-Sierra (NASDAQ: PMCS) today introduced the PM5397 ARROW-2xGE, the first physical layer device for efficient mapping of Gigabit Ethernet frames into aSONET/SDH transport network. The ARROW-2xGE supports two Gigabit Ethernet channels and independently maps each of them into a STS-48/STM-16 channelised payload, using the new virtualconcatenation (VC) and generic framing procedure (GFP) standards to ensure efficient use of the SONET channel bandwidth. The highly integrated ARROW-2xGE will be used in metropolitan area network (MAN) transport equipment, including multi service provisioning platforms (MSPP) and add/drop multiplexers. Equipment utilising the ARROW-2xGE allows service providers to offer carrier-class Ethernet transport over existing SONET/SDH networks, leveraging the performance and reliability of SONET/SDH together with the cost efficiencies of Ethernet. "Although incumbent and competitive service providers are embracing Ethernet as a metro area networking solution, SONET will continue to be the dominant transport architecture for the foreseeable future," said Allen Leibovitch, director of communications semiconductor research at South San Francisco-based research firm, RHK. "The requirement of Ethernet over SONET will drive demand for Chipsets like ARROW that can ease the overhead burden of carrying Ethernet over legacy networks."PMC-Sierra Inc.
