Do Apes Dig Money?

10:45 AM -- This month's Psychology Ptoday seeks to answer the burning question: "Do Monkeys Understand Money?"

  • To gain perspective on human financial decisions, one may ask, what would monkeys do?

Would they play the lottery? Sign on for a sub-prime mortgage? Buy an SUV? Respond hopefully to a Nigerian email?

The tentative answer seems to be: "No."

  • Keith Chen and Marc Hauser at Yale University taught monkeys about resources that bear a strong resemblance to money. Monkeys don't care about money, per se, but they do care about marshmallows...

The moral of the story: It's time we moved to a marshmallow-based economy.
