JAKARTA, Indonesia -- PT ExcelcomindoPratama (Excelcom) has completed the deployment of an Internet Protocol(IP)-enabled signaling endpoint designed to enable it to meet the demands ofa growing subscriber base for mobile data applications. Using the Cisco®(Nasdaq:CSCO - News) IP Transfer Point as a signaling gateway between thetraditional Signaling System 7 (SS7) wireless network and IP-enabledsignaling endpoints, Excelcom is taking advantage of the reliability andcost-efficiency of IP networks while building a foundation forthird-generation (3G) wireless network services.Excelcom, as the third nationwide mobile operator in Indonesia, is bringinga new dimension to the mobile experience of its customers with IP. At thesame time, the operator is able to maintain the stringent reliability andfeatures associated with SS7 networks, including subscriber authentication, message traffic delivery, and intelligent network functions such asprepaid-postpaid convergence and enhanced calling services."We have experienced incredible growth in our subscriber base since westarted operations in 1995. With a user base projected to grow from 1.8million today to well over 5 million in 3 years, we were looking for asolution that enables us to expand our network capacity as demand grows aswell as roll out new services. IP is clearly the way to go and Cisco had asolution that met our requirements," said Werner Noz, director, NetworkOperation of Excelcom.Irfan Setiaputra, managing director, Indonesia, Cisco Systems, said,"Excelcom has demonstrated great vision in integrating IP with its mobilenetwork and joins an elite group of mobile operators around the world.Traditional TDM-based SS7 networks are struggling to cope with anapplication as simple as the short message service, and the intensive dataand video requirements of 3G services are even more difficult. With ourexpertise in enabling our customers to build resilient IP networks, Cisco isin a good position to help operators build the next generation of IP-enabledmobile networks."Cisco Systems Inc.PT Excelcomindo Pratama
