MIPS Technologies launches operations in China, appoints chief representative for China, and establishes R&D center in China

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif. and BEIJING -- MIPS Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ:MIPS) a leading provider of industry-standard processor architectures and cores for digital consumer and business applications, today announced its entry into the China market with the establishment of a local subsidiary, MIPS Technologies (Shanghai) Co., Ltd. The new wholly-owned subsidiary includes an R&D center (see separate release) as well as sales and marketing operations.

Lai as Chief Representative for China. Mr. Lai will spearhead MIPS Technologies' entry into the fast-growing market for digital entertainment semiconductors in China.

An industry veteran with more than 20 years semiconductor, systems and communications experience throughout the Asia Pacific region, Lai brings sales, marketing and management expertise and a solid understanding of Chinese culture and business practices to the newly created position of Chief Representative for China.

Lai has held progressively senior management positions in China, Singapore and Hong Kong, with networking company Cabletron Systems, automotive electronics firm Delco Electronics, Computervision Asia, MIPS Computer Systems, Sun Microsystems and GE Calma.

Prior to joining MIPS Technologies, Mr. Lai was VP for Singapore-based i-Sprint Innovations PL, one of Asia's leading providers of Enterprise Security Consolidation and Identity Management solutions. During his tenure at i-Sprint, he was responsible for building i-Sprint's strategic partners program, in conjunction with developing and growing strategic relations with key customers, particularly in China.

From 2000 to 2003, Lai was VP, Asia Pacific for Netro Corporation, an industry leader in broadband, point-to-multipoint, fixed wireless access equipment and last-mile solutions. Prior to Netro's acquisition by SR Telecom, Lai was instrumental in expanding operations in Singapore and Beijing, developing a pan-Asian partners network, and securing major customers in China, Hong Kong and Indonesia. Prior to Netro, he was Managing Director, Southern Asia Pacific Operations, for SDRC where he successfully grew the business in Australia, India and ASEAN, and achieved revenue-profit targets in excess of 120% in every quarter.

Born in China, Mr. Lai grew up in South East Asia and graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering from McGill University, Montreal, Canada.

An extension of MIPS Technologies' engineering operations, this R&D center will focus on the development of new MIPSR processor hard cores, help Chinese companies design state-of-the art digital consumer devices and provide technical support to licensees throughout the region.

The opening of the R&D center was announced in tandem with MIPS Technologies' official entry into the Chinese embedded microprocessor market. Utilizing the company's extensive microprocessor technologies and IC design expertise along with local engineering talent, the center will create optimized MIPS hard cores targeting local manufacturing foundries such as SMIC and others, reducing SoC design cycle time and enabling rapid time to market for customers worldwide.

Magma Design Automation, with offices in China and throughout the Far East, will provide the R&D center with a full range of software design tools and engineering support at the MIPS Technologies Shanghai center.

MIPS Technologies has appointed Mr. Ying-wai Ho as General Manager of the Shanghai Center. Mr. Ho, a MIPS Technologies employee since 1996, will oversee the general operations of the R&D center and direct the engineering team in the production of the MIPS hard core processors. An engineering director with 20 years of high-performance microprocessor design and management experience, he most recently directed both the MIPS64R 20Kc(TM) and MIPS64R 25Kf(TM) design projects. Prior to joining MIPS Technologies, Inc., Mr. Ho worked with a variety of microprocessor design companies including Motorola Inc., Cyrix Corp and SGI.
