5G could turn out to be far more economically important than it might currently appear I'm reading Tim Harford's "50 things that made the modern economy" at the moment. It doesn't claim to be a listicle of the most economically significant inventions. It doesn't feature the printing press, spinning jenny, steam engine, airplane or computer. It does describe inventions whose importance is now taken for granted: the plough, barbed wire, the contraceptive pill, air conditioning, shipping containers, barcodes, public key cryptography, the compiler, radar, concrete, etc.

Undoubtedly mobile communications is a significant invention that has helped to accelerate economic activity. However, the move from 4G to 5G is incremental, not revolutionary.
