My fleece vest was buried in a an un-Kondoed closet across the continent. I got invited to one cool party. Doesn't suggest a correlation one way or the other, does it?

Thanks Duh! I've always found Verizon very pragmatic - at least they know how to present their case.

On the sleevless fleece - don't ask me. I'm still not clear on whether that's cool or uncool!

Yes, good point, I knew someone would raise that once i hit send. Ultra low latency and ultra high reliability for sure, I should have listed all or just written "5G" without the qualifier. But I also think big bandwidth because of all the data being gathered/processed. But the point of the Waymo presentation, was none of it would require 5G. 

For the big data piece, you can plug in the car at home and upload/download from the home connection. The 5G use case seems greatly diminished there.

I've argued for a while that Verizon has the best approach for that kind of densification. Tree architectures scale better than point-to-point.

That remark from the Waymo presentation confirmed what a lot of us strongly suspected. Absolute dependence on a mobile network for real-time driving tasks never passed the giggle test. He prefaced that by noting that onboard hardware will have to be task-optimized, not something you'd expect in an edge cloud data center. Toward the end of the presentation, he talked about some realistic 5G use cases. The one I found most interesting was the role of the network in the machine learning feedback loop.

If I bring my sleeveless fleece next year, does that mean I get invited to all of the cool parties?

I thought the big value of 5G in A2X was the low latency. Like lots of IoT (outside cameras), the bandwidth req's are really modest.

I didn't expect that the panel would leave people downtrodden, though I must admit I don't get invited to the cool parties and I don't even own a sleeveless fleece to leave a the door. I suppose the point was that the optics industry will have to do alot of sharing when it comes to 5G transport. Maybe some don't like to share.

In a similar vein, I was stunned during the Waymo keynote when the presenter said that all the autonomous vehicle processing would be have to be local - with no role for the big bandwidth of 5G. I wonder if the OFC organizers knew this would be the message when they booked Waymo? I"m not complaining, just surprised, since industry conferences tend to be high on industry cheerleading - particularly in the keynotes.

And I've always felt a connection with Charlie Brown.
