The last sentence of the piece is the most telling:

 

"In these collaborations, we negotiate intellectual property rights that allow us to continue our research and educational work," wrote Goel.

 

Money is all this is about. Fund those high eds, and you'll get a piece of the action if one invention really takes off. Cut the higher eds, then someone else will fund them.

 

If you now say no one else is allowed to fund them, then that's the end of basic research in that institution.

Correction
The original story quoted Xu as saying "close-minded." He actually said "closed-minded," of course. We've now made the correction.
