Interoperability adds value for vendors
In this article Verizon shares the experience of all major carriers.  After countless acquisitions and mergers, provider networks are disparate and weighed down with services and customer devices that we can't seem to get rid of.  When you add in the fact that vendors are not addressing migration paths when they onboard new technology, it is the carrier that has to manage the operational cost of maintaining those networks.  The back end infrastructure is not easily altered due to imbedded integrations and inventory relationships.  With all of this in mind we need vendors to play well with others.

Interoperability has a value proposition for vendors because until providers can support large scale automations they can't sell vendor products in mass. It becomes a drip, drip of new service activations. Carriers want to sell and drive revenue which in-turn benefits vendors who join us at the table with interoperability, standardized API's and anything that takes everyday tasks and allows them to be fully automated.

Thank you for your article.  The key take-away is that companies like Verizon, CenturyLink and AT&T will need to start excluding vendors that don't come to the table with interoperable solutions.

I guess I've spent too many years looking for the gold at the bottom of the pit rather than nearer the top. Regarding the complaints summarized in the headline, though, blame the vendor(s) isn't a new game, either. Plus, if things were so easy that anybody could do them, where would the potential for competitive advantage be?

I don't think she's saying it stands in the way, but that it could contribute to market confusion. 

And it's a small point, well down in the story, compared to the larger issues she raises.

It looks like the main complaint about AT&T is overaggressive marketing claims. I'm not sure how that stands in the way of Verizon's development efforts regarding automation.
