@kq4ym: Hey, China Mobile is state-owned and China's a world superpower. They can do what they want standards-wise if they really want to, and compel other organizations and standards-bodies to integrate.

The stand alone project would seem to be a signiicant gamble on their part espcially if the 5G standards deviate significantly, but on the other hand it surely gives them a head start over competitors in the race if all goes well with the small test planned.

Interoperability
Considering that ~2020 represents the time when key 3GPP standards will be freshly released, the last graf here is particularly key.

Of course, by being first (if they are so indeed first), perhaps China Mobile's work will serve to define and redefine new interoperability standards here.
