hi
It is nothing uncommon for a company to be wasting resources on something that is redundant or bought in excess. It is similar to how our daily spending truly reflects our bad decisions when it comes to buying things. We would only be able to realize what we have done when it is already too late. The damage has been done and we would have to accept the reality that we had wasted what we have on something we did not need.

Re: Surprised it's not more
That is really impressive! I hope you used that success to get a promotion. Nobody wanted to do the job and you made it into something they didn't expect.

Re: Surprised it's not more
@ Ariella yes there was some suffering and definitely a lack of sleep involved but all those involved gained great experiences. I am still proud when some of the young people that worked on the project early on tell me they are still using the UI insights they learned and some of the other techniques we used in development.

Re: Surprised it's not more
@Michelle, I called it the bleeding edge because every day I felt like I was bleeding but eventually the wounds healed and I wore the scares as badges of learning! The experience was invaluable. When I accepted the job everyone told me no one in the company wanted the job so they had to go outside-- everyone thought it would be a failure.Well, they were wrong, the product sold over plan almost immediately and was adopted by the majority of their existing clients and brought in new business!

Re: Surprised it's not more
You've been working on the web a long time! I have a lot of respect for web folks in that era :) I didn't start working in technology until the early 2000s (which weren't much better than late 90s).

@Maryam that makes you a real pioneer! All who followed owe you for suffering through paving the path.

Re: Surprised it's not more
@ariella yes the darkness inevitably leads to light. Sometimes it's just a rocky road. I worked on my first web product in the late 90s I learned so much because no one really knew anythig we tried sometimes failed and sometimes succeeded. In the end we made much better decisions in the future.

Yes, surprising but yet really not. Lots of waste as folks move into new areas, especially if the move if fairly rapid. but also of note that security is still a huge issue for most as noted "Security is a challenge for 77% of respondents." Wonder when that will change for the better?

Re: Surprised it's not more
@Maryam Quite so. At least then you can progress from unknown unknowns to known unknowns. And while that sounds like you're still in the dark, at least you know that you are in the dark and to be appropriately wary.

Re: Surprised it's not more
So true but so sad sometimes, when you start a new project you often don't know what you don't know. Experience at least tells you what you didn't know!
