VPN encryption and low-hanging fruit.
As I pointed out in my coverage for Light Reading sister site Security Now here (link), the solution makes sense given the underlying technology because VPNs help disguise and encrypt the traffic such that -- according to CL exec Chris Richter, in my interview with him -- even a black hat's spoofed router connection would only be able to get encrypted data...and black hats generally prefer low-hanging fruit unless the payoff is big enough. At the local coffee shop, they're likely to look elsewhere than deal with that nonsense, it would seem.

Dear CenturyLink: Why try any harder?
I think I was reading an article about CenturyLink being “relevant” then, I looked over at the 23-page survey CenturyLink physical-mailed to me from “Harmon Atchison Research” asking for reasons why I cancelled CenturyLink service at my home. When you have Gigabit-class Cable Service at home, I guess you you don’t necessarily need to worry about the backbone network; We’re developing new services disguised as “security” to prevent customers from using it.
