Re: Connected construction
@Michelle yes. Did I understand correctly that the machines are expected to last for 30 years? I suppose in industry it makes sense to want to get that much bang for your investment bucks, but it would be very hard to keep adjusting to the latest sensor and connection technology over such a long period of time.

Re: Connected construction
I can only assume industrial IoT is going to change manufacturing a lot in the coming years. Retrofitting dedicated machines with sensors and connecting them to the network will create plenty of problems and hopefully solve some as well. Older machine security will always be a concern for me. I wonder how they'll be protected over the longterm...

Re: Connected construction
Interesting analogy with the boom box vs. phone, which does bring up the questions that will be raised on what IoT can and should be used for in the manufacturing business where as noted a "toolmaking machine with a 30-year lifecycle into the Internet carries a unique set of concerns on the road to IoT." Just how to compliment traditional long lived machinery with fast developing apps and IoT devices and data will be an ongoing process to watch.

Connected construction
Its very interesting that something we consider as a tool, not a connected device is getting a rework. I would be very interested know what kind of capabilities the Bluetooth and connected aspects provide to the tools? I had some construction at my home and I was surprised when the gentlemen showed up with a boom box--he indicated it was too expensive to stream on his phone music or news all day. Would these technology enhancements fall victim to the same issues?
