Re: Not a Dinosaur, but....
Very true so maybe we should rebrand mainframe and give it another life?

Indeed. But the term "mainframe" has certainly evolved a lot over the years, too. I don't think that anyone working with the "original" mainframes could have even imagined what they've turned into now. Might as well call them supercomputers with backwards compatibility.

Re: Not a Dinosaur, but....
One might wonder how many heads if any were dismissed in the previous scores of quarters when the revenues indicated something had gone amiss at IBM. But whether the latest news will continue on that trend will be worth watching.

Comfort and cost
This will probably be the case for some time there are still companies that don't have the resources or desire to move off of mainframe completely. It serves their needs currently and they don't want to get entangled in costly migrations and disruptions. Eventually, mainframe may have to be shuttered but if IBM continues enhancements it may delay that indefinitely.

Re: Not a Dinosaur, but....
IF IBM hadn't achieved this type of performance relatively soon, heads would have rolled.

Re: Not a Dinosaur, but....
What surprising news for the IBM revenues to fianlly hit a postive number after those scores of quarterly misses. While it's also surprising to see the mainframe numbers quietly even surpassed the cloud revenue, noting "Cloud now accounts for 21% of IBM's revenues, up from 10% four years ago."

Not a Dinosaur, but....
Mainframe might not be a dinosaur -- mainframe the basis of cloud -- but IBM's outlook wasn't good enough for analysts, so stock still took a hit despite the good earnings.
