The owning a home analogy doesn't truly work. Unless you buy when prices are high and well low, you typically enjoy price appreciation. Technology becomes old VERY fast, a big reason to rent rather than buy.

Good point about rent vs. buying. Managed IT services do have  many advantages over the stuff you buy and maintain yourself over time.

It's the difference between rent vs. buy. If you own your own home, it costs more and you're responsible for maintenance and upgrades, but everything is under your control. If you rent, the landlord is responsible for everything – but might raise rents or slack on maintenance, suddenly requiring you to move when you were not planning to do so.

Soon, everything will be billed as a subscription (I guess). I suspect some IT shops won't like the new model. It is nice to buy once rather than every month.
