Exactly right. You'll often see stories lamenting how prices are still high if you subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, Amazon and every other service under the sun. But that ignores the fact that these users at least have the choice and some control over their bill by doing this.

They need to more seriously compete on price in terms of their traditional TV product. I know that's constrained to some degree by broadcasters, making it a sort of untenable position to be in. But so many of these executives seem to labor under the illusion that they have a choice whether to more seriously engage in real price competition.

It will be interesting to see how business plans change over the next few years as consumers make big changes in how they get their screen time. Convenience and cost are certainly going to be driving forces, but there's probably still some influence to be had by marketing departments selling the sizzle and finding services and products that consumers didn't know they needed.
