Paul -- a little off your Euro beat, but the Vertu death notice comes as Huawei takes the wraps off a limited-edition KFC-branded smartphone in China. I wonder if there's a lesson in this.

Imagine the revenue possibilities of a Kardashian-branded "smart"phone.

Maybe not so fast?
At FiberConnect 2017 a few weeks ago, I was hearing of a schism in the next-gen PON community as to whether or not to take the next logical step in the data rate progression and standardize 25G modulation (and 4*25G TWDM). Some operators want time to digest the current generation (XGS-PON and NG-PON2) before having to think about the next big thing.

It's obvious where Huawei stands. The strongest opposition seems to be coming from the US, which is not a market they've been able to penetrate. They have hired some of the best global PON technology talent, mixed it with a lot of very smart people in China, and constantly show off their hero experiments. Most of the other vendors aren't willing to be that far "out there".
