Re: Always have a back-up
Unfortunately, these types of attacks occur, some companies address the issues and others don't. But even many who fix the current issue don't look ahead to try to stay protected. As my late mother would say, they are constantly closing the barn door after the horse is loose.

Re: Always have a back-up
It did seem that the "vulnerability used by the malware propagation mechanism is known and patched," and one has to wonder why so many were failing to patch even after that remedy was know long before. But, as noted it's always easier said than done, and some departments for various reasons just can't do those patches quick enough. But at least this one gives everyone more reason to ponder how quickly those concerns need to be addressed.

Re: Always have a back-up
You were right to point out bank ATMs. There are many of these systems that rely on older OS because it was argued the cost to upgrade was too expensive. Once security support is gone, it's too expensive not to upgrade due to security risk.

Always have a back-up
News of the vulnerability was well-covered by media. I'm glad it gave many reason to apply pending updates to outdated systems (even XP!!). I wonder how Microsoft will handle future incidents that affect out-of-support versions. How might ransomware affect a bank ATM? I assume the US has a great number running older versions of Windows.
