Though virtual presence tools makes it easier to outsource many or most jobs and certainly makes it easier for companies to work with fewer onsite employees, sometimes you lose valuable "group think" that can occur when you can gather multiple people together in same location. Virtual meetings can be difficult -- though not impossible -- to schedule when working across a variety of time zones.

Additionally, once a company gets to a certain size, there are some efficiencies to be gained by having enough staff on the job to handle some items that are more difficult to outsource.

Virtual presence
I do not understand why, with the availability of virtual presence tools such as Skype, that companies do not hire people in countries outside the US and have these knowledge workers operate via long distance. Even hardware development can be done that way.
