Best of Breed – Dream or Reality?
The NFV ideal is mix and match, best of breed, freedom to pick and replace any vendor.

The reality is that IMS promised the same thing and service providers largely went to single vendor or highly integrated blueprint solutions (e.g., Ericsson with lots of stuff and 3-4 pre-integrated third-party vendors like Acme Packet and Camiant). NFV VoIP/IMS  promises to be morecomplex than IMS of the last 10 years given the NFVI, VNF and MANO components. See The New IP Agency Virtual Machines, Real Complexity

It's an old idea, does NFV and "new IP make it more or less feasible? Are service providers really going to be the integrator and do this? Is mix and match realistic from both initially building a network and then operating/troubleshooting it? Where is the integration expertise going to come from?

This work between Metaswitch and HPE is a proof point that the future is like the past.
