Great presentation. Hopefully we'll see DOCSIS 3.1 in more places!

Light Sabre

connectivity, pricing

Light Beer

is there a list of deployment cities with timeframes?

Light Beer

is docsis 3.1 only currenty avail in Atl, CHI, Det, MIA, nashville?

Light Beer

is the effect on wifi, only speed of DL/UL?

Light Beer

how will docsis 3.1 effect tv ?

Light Beer

what are failing tolerence of gb network?

Light Beer

Thanks a lot Saif, Alan, Ty and Kelsey.

Light Sabre

On vacation I use to do those all things I can´t on busy days

Light Sabre

Sorry, I missed the live show, finally I am here

Light Sabre

I am confuse as to the following with DOCSIS3.1

What is the max up and down speed at the note

and what is the max up and down speed at the modem.

Light Beer

Thanks for clarifying that @Saif!

Blogger

@Kelsey..D3.1 is built to be very fault tolerant. As  opposed to prior version fo DOCSIS, D3.1 degrades grandually and gracefully. This was designed into the protocol.

Light Beer

Excellent infomration, Thank you!!

Light Beer

Ur welcome.

Saif

Light Beer

Thanks for the information

Light Beer

Thanks for answering those questions @sxra! Thanks for an excellent lecture, Saif, Alan and Ty, it was great having you all present here at Upskill U, we learned a lot! Listeners, we'll see you on 10/19 for the start of our Security series Securing a Virtual World. Next week is a study week so catch up on previous courses and work your way toward your certificate!!

Blogger

@AhmedZa

Your home network is already streaming HD services today. If there were new applications that did require hgher speeds you would need to replace that equipment to support the applications. Today most in-home wifi netoworks cannot support 1 Gigabit speeds.

Blogger

We are able to free up addtional spectrum via MPEG4 (AVC or in the future HEVC) instead of MPEG2 video codec.

Light Beer

I agree, the presentation was very thought-provoking!

Light Beer

In reference to leakage signals and OFDM/OFDMA, there are no issues with D3.1 breaking leakage detection methods. D3.1 might even simplify leakage as vendors are leveraging the OFDM pilots rather than having a separate transmitter in the hub.

Light Beer

@Saif/Alan/Ty Here's another listener Q:

What is the fault tolerance of these Gigabit networks? Is it "the bigger they come, the harder they fall?"

Blogger

Thanks everyone ! Fiber to an area then hands off to coax. How many Docsis 3.1 users max before we need to dedicate another fiber to split up those customers

Light Beer

Thank you for the great presentation

Light Beer

@Saif/Alan/Ty a few more questions came in from listeners:

How is Comcast expanding its access to spectrum for the transition to D3.1? Analog spectrum is already reclaimed. The move to MPEG4 for HD is in process. Will Comcast upgrade to a 1GHz plant? 1.2GHz?

Blogger

Thanks for presenting the Gigabit

Light Beer

Thank you everyone, Great subject matter.

Have a great weekend

Light Beer

Thanks everyone for your thoughtful insight!

Light Beer

Great job, Ty!

Light Beer

Thanks, everyone.

Light Beer

we need speed!

Light Beer

Does DOCSIS 3.1 affect results of signal leakage sweeps?

Blogger

Thanks to all great presentation.

Light Beer

To what extent do operators need to go fiber deeper to optimize Docsis 3.1 performance, or are they completely unrelated?

Light Beer

you mentioned that 1Gbps is straining many home devices/systems....how much bandwidth is required for (HD tv systems) service?

Light Beer

When will the syncretization be available for Comcast Business Customers?

We keep moving up the scale on the Down but need more up

Light Beer

Will Comcast take a role in future in promoting new gigabit applications so users get the most from these high-speed D3.1 connections?

Blogger

Cool beans! Great info

Blogger

Thanks everyone! We'll discuss the results of the polls shortly. Don't forget to get your questions in, coming up on time for Q&A in just a few minutes!

Blogger

@JohnGordon: Let's hope we are right, in that this new fangled D3.1 delivers all, or at least a few, of the promised improvements.

Light Beer

Speed, bandwidth and efficiency are  so closely related that I'd have to count them together as one.  The others seem to be at par with each other.

2nd poll: faster speed and of course higher bandwidth that goes with it

Light Beer

improve network efficiency

Light Beer

What are the top two biggest benefits of DOCSIS 3.1? Faster speeds, higher bandwidth capacity, improved network efficiency, reduced costs, real-time performance analysis, improved quality control, or something else?

Blogger

Helpful speaking about these good slides.

Light Beer

When modems throttle down to lower order modulations, does the DOCSIS 3.1 scheduler compensate by increasing the size of allocation for those modems?

Blogger

@gnean thanks! Glad to hear you'll be joining us for the security module and I agree, it's a timely subject :)

Blogger

@KelseyZiser: Good modules all round. Security series is very timely (given the recent NSA fiasco, and October being Cyber-Security Awareness month).

Light Beer

@gnean yes, that'll be a really insightful series and Prof. Nick Feamster will be back to teach another course!

Blogger

Looking forward to the Security modules, which start in a fortnight.

Light Beer

Great question @gnean!

Blogger

What it the fault tolerance of these Gigabit networks? Is it "the bigger they come, the harder they fall?"

Light Beer

You're welcome @john and Good question @gnean!

Blogger

Is IoT built into this D3.1? So, vendors and customers can monitor bandwidth, etc., right out of the box?

Light Beer

not ready

Light Beer

Thank you for addressing my question. I appreciate it.

Light Beer

We will not deploy D3.1 since we are a a Telco

Light Beer

Hello everyone

Light Beer

Good morning/afternoon everyone!  Remember to turn up your volume on the computers.  At the top of the hour an audio player will pop up on your screen.  If you don't see it, try to press F5 to refresh your screen. Go ahead and download the slides from the link in the "Special Educational Materials" section located above the live chat. Be sure to post your questions, comments and thoughts on the message boards!

Blogger

QUESTION: On slide 21, it says "Modem HW revs may have incompatibility w/ binary image –Need different code (binary) based on rev of modem SoC." Could elaborate on that? I'm not sure what you mean by our needing a different code.

Light Beer

Bonjour and hola too

Light Sabre

Howdy y'all, back.
