Light Sabre

I am here again, greetings to all

Light Sabre

Thanks for a great session!!!

Light Beer

Parts of organization have implemented devops and parts are not. However, collaboration is good and constantly improving within all in organization.

Light Beer

I am not really aware of challenges with devops in my organisation as I don´t work in team where there is something with devops in place.

Light Beer

Would be great to hear more about financial management that was mentioned (main differences with waterfall)?

Light Beer

Hello:) Many fav books, cannot choose only one!

Light Beer

Thanks very much

@Burt thanks so much for a wonderful lecture! @Listeners - see you back at Upskill U next Wednesday

Interesting session

@Burt Another Listener Q -

Is it advisable/possible to implement major ERP software, given their complexity and very poor out-of-box functionality?

Yes, it is.  Will you get all DevOps principles and methodologies - probably not due to their proprietary structure BUT we have had very good progress with Siebel, SAP, Oracle etc.  You can make positive change with DevOps in these environments with a little creative thinking.  Just ring me and we can talk thru what you are trying to achieve.  I'll be happy to share some ideas.

Light Beer

Is it possible to show ROI for implementing DevOps to senior management?

Yes it is.  Tracking project cost, timelines, defects captured in production (hopefully 0), mean time to restoral of service etc all come down to a $$ amount.  ADDITIONALLY the speed to market addresses revenue generation which is a very positive ROI to your share price and bottom line.

Light Beer

Thanks for the lecture.

Light Beer

question - Technical skills like GIT,MAVEN,Jenkins,Nexus,Chef and aws etc

the skills are easy to learn BUT how to use them effectivly and efficiently are more difficult.  Just because you use Sonor Cube doesn't mean you review the reports, automatically break the build when appropriate, feed best practices back to the team members etc.

think like you are learning to drive.  I know how to shift into gear, give it some gas and let off the clutch... that does not mean i am going to do it perfectly when sitting stopped on a hill into a curve... you need to pratice and learn what is best for your organization.

Our team is here to help you thru this journey (Upskill U, Burt, other guest lecturer, bird of a feather groups etc)

Light Beer
Thanks for posting my training question @Kelsey. Thanks for the response @BurtKlein. Have a good weekend!
Light Beer

software - free/open vs. vendor... great question that is not an easy answer.  A fair portion depends on your eco system.  There are many organizations doing very well with a mix of the two. Very few have gone 100% open/free just because of the capabilities they offer, ongoing support and organizational risk.

Light Beer

@Burt Listener Q -

Is it possible to show ROI for implementing DevOps to senior management?

Blogger

Thank you. good  discussions.

Light Beer

Training is the most important item.  The softskills and hard skills need to be addressed.  Teaching a solid developer/tester/operations person a new hard skill is pretty straight forward. there are plenty of classes available from many organizations (Techm included).

The softskils are harder to teach but there are people that can assist.  if you have any specifics please email me (thru linkedin works well) and Ill be happy to point you in the right direction.

Light Beer

@Burt Another Listener Q -

Is it advisable/possible to implement major ERP software, given their complexity and very poor out-of-box functionality?

Blogger

question - for project estimation.. any thump rule to load operation team effort to be considered in project effort in devopr framework

This is part of the finanicial perspective - you can't build a team only to tear it down for the next project.  we need to fund teams like you would for the agile development BUT include the other groups

Light Beer

@Burt LIstener Q -

Since everyone's skill set isn't "full stack," where does training fit in the DevOp implementation plan?

Blogger

Thanks a lot, have nice weeken everyone

Light Sabre

Yes, I am looking forward to the Security modules in a few weeks.

Light Beer

Great session!! Thanks @Burt and @Kelsey!!!!

Light Beer

thank you burt...

Light Beer

Thank you Burt and Kelsey - great discussion

Light Beer

Thank you Burt and Kelsey!

Light Beer

thanks. great talk.

Light Beer

I'm looking forward to October's Security set

Light Beer
Thank you Burt and Kelsey!
Light Beer
Agreed @ Faisal
Light Beer

this has been an amazing class....

Lightning

Thank you Burt and Kelsey

Light Beer

Thanks, Burt K. and Kelsey Ziser.

Light Beer

Even though you can use opensource, but skillset is still needed...which needs investment

Blogger
Thanks for answering my question!
Light Beer

Technical skills like GIT,MAVEN,Jenkins,Nexus,Chef and aws etc

Light Beer

Thanks for answering my questions

Light Beer

what are skills required be a DevOps Engineer?

Light Beer

@Michelle yes ...ha!

Lightning

Maybe risk could be controlled by implementing DevOps on a rolling basis, if that's possible.

Light Beer

Standardize and simplify are my mantras

Light Beer
Is it possible to show ROI for implementing DevOps to senior management?
Light Beer

we want to avoid insanity

Light Sabre

Standardize tools, use open source components, recruit at colleges for existing and future workforce

Moderator

Iterative/spiral methodology has been around for a while, so it looks like DevOps is the same animal with a different name/skin.

Light Beer

@ TeleWRITRZliz, I see US telcos quite advanced with this kind of investing

Blogger

is it easier to train someone from IT to be the devops engineer or should it be someone from the software team?

Light Beer

Is DevOps a fad? Sort of "me too?"

Light Beer

@Faisal, I think many company have to go that route because of the talent cruch

Lightning

Every major USA telco is investing heavly... :)

Light Beer

DevOps thrives in a culture of collaboration

Blogger

for project estimation.. any thump rule to load operation team effort to be considered in project effort in devopr framework

Light Beer
LOL! @TeleWRTRLiz ...I didn't expect pig either
Light Beer

Verizon is also investing big time in its employees

Blogger

investing in the existing talent makes sense -- that's what AT&T is going with its University

Lightning

I can picture the PMI certified being dragged along by the scruf of their neck, kicking and screaming. :-) :-)

Light Beer

@ispushparaj, cost and agilitity are the primary goals

Blogger

@ ispushparaj, of course it reduces cost

Blogger

for a minute I thought he was going to say are you the chicken or the egg....pig was unexpected!

Lightning

Chicken contributes (eggs)

Pig is commited (life)

Light Beer

Buy in is very important from internal stake holders

Blogger

I've heard DevOps improves speed and quality. Does it reduce really cost?

Light Beer

they're not ready

Light Sabre

Organisations will be benifited if we implent the project with Devops..

Light Beer

what is the first step we should take to implement DevOps

Blogger

Wow, lots of great questions everyone!

Blogger

I think our Weds class chat board had a bunch of folks listing out local meet ups on Dev Ops

Lightning
Thanks @Faisal Khan
Light Beer

Can you give us some examples of the impact of DevOps on the service providers you've worked with?

Moderator

change is bad because it takes so long... to some

Light Sabre

given the priority structure of DecOps, does it lesson the ability to be forward thinking on new features?

Light Beer

good question dfperson

Blogger

everyone works together

Light Sabre

[email protected]:We are executing the project with Agile methodology, how my organisation will be benifit if we implent the project with Devops..

Light Beer
Question: If your company just isn't ready to implement DevOps, could outsourcing be an option?
Light Beer

Setting up teams that include both Dev and Ops, seeing it from the other side's perspective.

Moderator

What skills are needed amony employees to implement DevOps ?

Blogger

I <3 baseline metrics

Light Sabre

Is it worth transitioning open projects to a DevOps approach or start out the gate with new projects only?

Light Beer

moderately well

Light Beer

We are too early for DevoPS

Blogger

Agile for you, heh!

Light Beer

Gradually introducing it

Light Beer

Yes, there was some overlap in the audio from Kelsey and Burt.

Light Beer

moderately well. It depends on the employee and their willingness for engagement.

Light Beer
Yeah I heard that too Michelle
Light Beer

We are a large telco, there are political polirazations so it is not easy for the DevOps

the enivornment is not there

Blogger

How well has your organization created a culture of collaboration in their DevOps model? Not well, moderately well, very well or your organization has not yet adopted a DevOps model.

Blogger

not yet adopted a model

Moderately Well

Light Beer
Not yet adopted
Light Beer

poll question audio is covering up presentor

Light Sabre

Iteration is life!

Light Sabre

Are there DevOps specific KPI/Metrics to measure and monitor along this journey to measure progress?

Light Beer
Need training on devops
Light Beer

Senior management will ask for prove points. How to get there?

Light Beer

which region is more advanced in DevOps

Blogger

Can open source groups provide training related to embracing DevOps?

Moderator

creating teams and moving forward without looking back can really slow down progress gained

Light Sabre

what are right tools for Devops from build to release

Light Beer

6 to 12 months

Lightning

6 months is too less for such a change

Blogger

Isn't the CIO or IT VP who has the onus to ram DevOps through?

Light Beer
Question: Since everyone's skill set isn't "full stack," where does training fit in the DevOp implementation plan?
Light Beer

Question for Burt K: What happens to CMM (Capability Maturity Model) when DevOps is introduced?

Light Beer

In a DevOps methodology a Test A/B infrastructure is very necessary. What is the timeline to give new features or new fixes for continuous Software delivery ? What is the Financial implications and issues related to giving Software continuously ?

Light Beer

Is there multiple types of DevOps models .....I saw one model from IBM

Blogger

So true!!

"tools are not devops"

Light Sabre

how does it best suits to QA teams?

Light Beer

Q: how do you verify financial gains using DevOps?

Light Beer

@KPraveen: Try refreshing your browser session, failing that close and start the browser and log back in.

Light Beer

Totally agree, DevOps is not about tools

Blogger

@john your welcome, great question and i'm sure others have faced that issue.

Blogger

company culture

Lightning

resource & skill limitation

Light Beer

I would like to know how DevOps fit large SPs, that have organization silos between Dev AND oPS

Blogger
What are the challenges a large company would face while implementing DevOps as opposed to a small company? Probably more politics...
Light Beer

Level 3's Andrew Dugan: The simple truth is this is not a shift that happens overnight; first and foremost, it requires the entire business to recognize and to embrace the journey.

Moderator

Unable to hear voice

Light Beer

Thank you for answering my question about countering a cynical boss.

Light Beer

I agree with many in the room today -- company culture

Light Sabre

Resoure Skills limitations and as well as people's unwillingness to change !

Light Beer

@goldman, DevOps is technology agnostic

Blogger

Resource and skill limitations

Light Sabre

Question for Burt K: Is it advisable/possible to implement major ERP software, given their complexity and very poor out-of-box functionality?

Light Beer

My organisation is buiding it gradually

Light Beer

Virtual walls built over years between DEV and OPS.

Light Beer

biggest challenge: Still skill fragmentation

Light Beer

challenge - Mostly skill and lack of interoperability

Light Beer

Resource and Skill limitation

Light Beer

company culture,

Light Beer

I noticed your slide on tool chain does not include Containers. I think, containers is the essential tool in DevOps toolchest.

Light Beer

Culture (difficult to teach old dogs new tricks).

Light Beer

lack of management drive

Light Beer

The biggest challenge is understanding what is DevOps....the education part

Blogger

reply to 1st listener poll: consensus about why we want DevOps

Light Beer

What's the biggest challenge your organization faces in regard to DevOps? Consensus as to WHY you want DevOps, budgetary constraints, company culture, lack of interoperability between new applications and legacy equipment, resource or skill limitations, or something else?

Blogger

devops purpose to reduce friction increse production?

Light Beer

the word of the day: SugFloCocSalBak

Light Beer

Question for Burt K: Given that Tech Mahindra is an outsourcing company, how many of their most recent engagements are DevOps/Agile style?

Light Beer

it sounds to be like DevOps doesn't necessary have to apply to software development....it sounds like it can apply to many projects and initiatives --

Lightning
I get that DevOps is not a tool or set of tools, but you still need tools, right? What type of budget (minimum) does a company need to get started?
Light Beer

Have to love a dessert analogy :)

Blogger

@Kelsey Ziser: It is worth reading, and easy read. Great for looking intelligent at a cocktail party.

Light Beer

@Faisal, it's top down decision making

Lightning

AT&T calls it creating "A One Team Culture"

Moderator

what is waterfall model?

Blogger

@gnean that sounds really interesting! I'll have to add it to my list

Blogger

Question for Burt K: When implementing DevOps, is it a gradual introduction (agile) or big bang (waterfall) implementation?

Light Beer

very good point, agreed @Kelsey....

Lightning

For any math/IT reader, here is an entertaining book: "The Computer Science Of Human Decisions"

Light Beer

Is there a service provider that has implemented DevOps in the real sense
