Light Beer

are telco grasping all the advantags open provides

Light Beer

how will telcos ensure security when using open source

Light Beer

Early on in the cloud days, Google was pretty good with open sourcing some of their products. I think now all the focus is on APIs, however. Anyone else agree?

Light Sabre

could you send a slide that shows that stat (open APIs vs. Opensource). Thanks.

Light Beer

@yungyu it should load automatically once you click on the course link, you could try another browser or check with your IT department to see if the audio player is being blocked.

Blogger

i wonder how to watch old sessions from archived tracks. i clicked "watch now", but could only get slides, not video/audio. any suggestion is appreciated.

Light Beer

Thanks - great input

Light Beer
Thankz TeleWR and Roz
Light Beer

Enjoyed it....thanks...

Light Beer

Thanks a lot! Great class!

Light Beer

Good stuff.  Thanks Roz & Kelsey!

Light Beer

Great, thanks! see you tomorrow!

Lightning

Great class! Thanks Roz & Kelsey! See everyone back here tomorrow at the same time, I hope. Looking forward to hearing from LinkedIn

Lightning

THANKS KELSEY & ROZ STAY COOL!

Light Beer
Just as important
Light Beer

@Roz Thanks so much for the excellent lecture today and for sticking around to answer our questions! @Listeners - thanks for tuning in and for posting so many great questions! I'll see you back here tomorrow for Open Source for White Box Networks with Saikrishna Kotha with LinkedIn.

Blogger

@Faisal-I don't know that ETSI NFV ISG looks at how the VNFs themselves are architected. They are more concerned about the platforms that will support the VNFs and the related interfaces.

Blogger

Keep on giving such nice sessions

Blogger

@Faisal, there is even the extreme case coming strong, "Serverless Computing"

Light Beer

Containers are especially important in more edge type applications or VNFs like vCPE, where being more lightweight is especially important.

Blogger

I think Saikrishna will be talking about containers in our class tomorrow on Open Source and White Box networks so tune back for that one.

Lightning

Listeners - here's the link to Roz's other Upskill U course if you'd like to listen to that! Virtualization 101

Blogger

@Roz  But why ETSI MANO does not show containers?

Blogger

Enjoyed the lecture. Thanks again.

Light Beer

containers/Docker will most likely be used by the vendors creating the VNFs.

Blogger

Maybe containers call for a separate Talk :)

Light Beer

We definitely see a future for opensource

Blogger

Light Beer. but I heard that Google is using Kubernetes instead of dockers ?
Blogger

@Roz Listener Q: Do you see the future only open source or do you see room for propriety software?

Blogger
Thank you very much Roz, excellent lecture. Really, you could have own radio program, it is so easy to follow you!
Light Beer

Good stuff, thanks

Light Beer

Thanks for such a great class Roz and Kelsey!

Lightning

@Roz Listener Q: how much Containers/Docker/etc has been brought into NFV and OPENFV ?

Blogger

Yes @JohnGordon, I know the difference, just curious on why ETSI MANO does not show them. ETSI MANO is hypervisor based

Blogger
@TeleWRTRLiz - Thanks for the glossary link

Light Beer

Thanks, it was great

Light Beer

Thank you, Roz.  Enjoyed it.

Light Beer

@Faisal Khan ("why ETSI MANO architecture does not show containers, rather virtual machines"): The containers and virtual machines are almost the same, anyway, except for containers sharing OS instead of running their own separate OS, no? Containers a lot smaller than VM, but I look at them as functionally pretty much the same, no?

Light Beer

Thank you Roz and Kelsey! Yet another great lecture on Upskil U :)

Light Beer

Thank you, Roz and Kelsey

Light Beer

Thanks Roz for such an insightful session

Blogger

For those who might need help with understanding terms, don't forget about our Glossary which you can find above and through this link: http://www.virtuapedia.com/proddir/dir_list.asp?dir_id=11

Lightning

Enjoyed the presentation. Thanks!

Light Beer

@Faisal, it's a bit incorrect question whether Docker or Kubernetes "will take over" Docker is container technology, Kubernetes is container orchestration, which is complimentary. However, Kubernetes vs. Docker Swarm question is more applicable.

Light Beer

Maybe a good question, how much Containers/Docker/etc has been brought into NFV and OPENFV ?

Light Beer

Very interesting presentation, Open source defintely has future

Blogger

Which one is better, opensource or open standards (IETF)?

Blogger

@n1ghthawk, the market around kubernetes is growing owing to google

Blogger

NFV came out before Docker/Containers came into the picture... not sure how much up dating has been done

Light Beer

why ETSI MANO architecture does not show containers, rather virtual machines

Blogger

http://kubernetes.io

http://mesos.apache.org

Light Beer

Docker is the container platform, it has a (growing) ecosystem around

Light Beer

Do you think Kubernetes will take over

Blogger

which one has future, dockers or kubernetes

Blogger

@n1ghthawk -- Kubernetes was new to me -- MESOS seems familiar, but I will check.

Light Beer

@Director11356 Kubernetes

Lightning

They can interoperate, Mesos and Kubernetes

Light Beer
Great research, Roz, it was very needed!
Light Beer

From what i gather Kubernetes goes hand in hand with containerization. particularly orchastration part. However, Mesos is a strong contender

Light Beer

@JohnGordon, thank you

Blogger

Good stuff. Thanks Roz Roseboro and Kelsey Ziser

Light Beer

Do you see the future only open source or do you see room for propriety software

Blogger

@Roz -- Thanks for a great talk.  Hope you do another talk soon.

lin

Light Beer

How about MESOS?  It came up earlier, @lin

Light Beer

@Faisal Khan: I think the slide show is completed, so no slide numbers now.

Light Beer

Thanks for the lesson

Light Beer

@n1ghthawk -- Kubernetes hasn't been mentioned in the Cloud MOOCs I've been taking.  But will look into it.

lin (aka ANON)

Light Beer

what is slide no please

Blogger

Thanks, Roz. Really informative.

Light Sabre

I wonder if her research is going to include that going forward @n1ghthawk

Lightning

@ANON: Google's container software called either Kubernetes or Omega (Kubernetes is lighter weight version of Omega, no?).

Light Beer

Informative and brief, thanks!

Light Beer

Good stuff. Thanks Roz Roseboro and Kelsey Ziser.

Light Beer

Maybe ROZ can see how they compare, MESOS vs Kubernetes

Light Beer

Kubernetes is gaining a lot of traction, IMHO from what i see around

Light Beer

I wonder what the % split is for API vs. Open Source?

Lightning

@lin  Kubernetes

Light Beer

Roz,

Could you please repeat the name of the container management tool from Google that you mentioned earlier in the talk?

Light Beer

With so many open source projects and software available, how does any Telco or any Company decide which one is best for them ? Do they need to look at each documentation if the open source has the right community support/ apis and source code available for their focus ?

Where is your organization in the process of using open source for cloud services? The research phase, developmental phase, or implementation phase?

Light Beer

I guess by containers peeps mean Docker, or not?

Light Beer

What was the name of the container management tool from Google?

Light Beer

@gneangodav8v ("I think only a massive monetary loss for these telcos will bring the security issue to the surface and get some respect."): If I were a hacker, I would avoid wreaking that kind of havoc, if my intention was continued intrusion, and stay under the radar.

Light Beer

@Allison -- aren't containers ubiquitous?

Light Beer

At least one big telco has a big (internal) project for DCs using Containers

Light Beer

Based on what Roz is saying, I'd imagine containers are a way off in telecom

Light Sabre

Is containers software mature enough for mission critical?

Light Beer

How much traction do you see containers gaining?

Light Beer

@ANON12499 Thanks.

Light Beer

I think only a massive monetary loss for these telcos will bring the security issue to the surface and get some respect.

Light Beer

@gneangoav8v -- if a vendor adds value to an OpenSource project, they can normally charge for this

Light Beer

avoiding vendor lock-in is huge

Light Beer

@GeorgiaCougar0 -- I am more concerned about security in black box software

Light Beer

any software app on the Web is a security concern...

Light Beer

it's a shame that open source is still seen as more insesure on the whole - not all projects are insecure

Light Sabre

Question for Roz R: The software being used by vendors is "free" for the vendor, but why isn't the service free for the customer/consumer?

Light Beer

QUESTION: Interoperability means that telcos will need to avoid all customization of open source code, no?

Light Beer

open source and security are at conflict with each other in some folks minds

Light Beer

QUESTION: Is it true that telecos are concerned about there not being an open SDN platform consensus?

Light Beer

I have the PDF just didnt realize. I have them open now

Light Beer

@t1mm slides are in the link above the live chat

Blogger

Question for Roz R.: Is the Open Source you speak of an aggregation of open source components that a softwae vendor takes/steals and customizes?

Light Beer

Are telcos only used to commercial software, hence dont do viable clouds?

Light Beer

love her definition of open source

Light Beer

is there a slide or visual portion of this we should be seeing?

Light Beer

This is a great follow on class to our previous two classes on open source....it's all coming together.

Lightning

What about issues with legacy OSS/BSS with NFV, etc.?

Light Beer

Howdy y'all from Georgia.

Light Beer

Error: I meant to say wouldn't have VNF WITHOUT the power to manage it....I 'll edit it in the source....

Light Beer

QUESTION: On slide 4, where it says VNF/MANO integration is a current issue that telcos face, aren't MANO and VNF designed for each other? That is, you wouldn't have VNF WITHOUT the power to manage it via MANO, no? Or probably I just misunderstand.

Light Beer
