Docker is great! I think it's ready for primetime. By that I mean consumer applications. Anyone have any ideas for that?

Light Sabre

You can use your laptop to run docker version of NOS (network OS) to test functionality. You will be needing whitebox switch HW for realthing.

Oh, darn. This was Thursday. Sorry I missed this course.

Light Beer

thanks from me as well

Thanks, great stuff
Light Beer
This so good to know
Light Beer

Interesting stuff. Thanks everyone

Light Beer

As a follow on to @GeorgiaCougar, I wonder if there are specific coding languages to focus on?

Lightning

@Riza Good point, but would vitual machines enable them to read each other's language?

Light Beer

Thanks @Sai for the excellent presentation, we all learned a lot and it's great to have the checklist on slide 2 to refer back to. Listeners, thanks for the great questions and engagement!

Blogger

How does someone get trained and hired to writing the code for White box?

Light Beer

@Sai Listener Q: Is it ever practical to utilize a "regular" computer on the market and transform it into a whitebox?

Blogger

Thank you all for your participation. Hope talk helps you in your whitebox journey.

@SalesAna: Well, these are likely to be running differnt NOSs. Properitary vs Open

Light Beer

Thanks @Sai and @Kelsey that was a really great class. Learned a lot --

Lightning

great session. Thanks

Light Beer

Saikrishna & Kelsey Thanks Very much for the Great Presentation!

Light Beer

Thanks a lot, have a nice weekend

Light Sabre

Got To love UpSkill

Light Beer

Are there any concerns with perfomance overhead?

Light Beer

great program

Light Beer

Thanks.

Learning something new.

Light Beer
Decently good boxes too
Light Beer

@RixaH201 Wouldn't bare metal appliances and whitebox switches have semantic interoperability provided they can read each other's code?

Light Beer

There are vendors selling white boxes, Cumulus, Pica8, others?

Light Beer

arent white box for east-west, not north-south?

Light Beer

Have you leveraged Open Compute servers for this ?

Light Beer

good question @Riza

Lightning

What about the interoperability between the legacy (bare metal appliances) and Whitebox switches

Light Beer

Saikrishana -- Thanks for a great presentation.

Light Beer

I think this is a good example of automation that someone asked about below...can't find their name now. Wow you all are really posting a lot of chat board messages!

Lightning

Maybe... an Open Compute box can do it

Light Beer

@salesana85750 -- the rise of "big data" goes hand-in-hand with dynamic allocation of resource.

Light Beer

It seems like the dynamic allocation of resources/computing power coincides well with the big data boom and the need to analyze big data.

Light Beer

Yes, I like slide 10

Is it ever practical to utilize a "regualar" computer on the market and transform it into a whitebox?

Light Beer

phase 3 - monitoring and learning

Light Beer

Actively monitoring thsi space

Light Beer

Listeners, which phase is your company in with regard to white box adoption? 1. already deployed 2. planning to deploy in the next 6 - 12 months. 3. actively monitoring this space.

Blogger

3 - actively monitoring (researching)

Light Beer

monitoring this space

Light Beer

planning to deploy

Light Beer

Moitoring the space - research, study

Light Beer

Are white boxes enabling open source projects to prosper or are they pushing closed source projects out?

Light Beer

already deployed

Light Beer

Reply to 2nd poll question: mostly Phase III (actively monitoring space)

Light Beer

Planning to deploy in the next 2-3 months

Lightning

phase 1 and ongoing

Light Beer

So of the white box server options out there (Cumulus, Pica8, BigSwitch, etc.), which one is your favorite?  Why?

Light Beer

Re hackathon enabler -- very cool to think about the possiblities this type of architecture will enable for service providers going forward.

Lightning

It's come a long way from ddwrt

Light Beer

slide 6 fabric scalability: are required 4 or 32 spines?

Light Beer

Can those Kafka brokers be in a cloud like AWS? and even the rest

Light Beer

@Saikrishna Are the use of virtual machines rendering white box networks obsolete in some applications?

Light Beer

bare metal switches are built with merchant silicon not propeitary chips

Light Beer

@ANON1249996548923 I think you're right, but it seems that bare-metal switches are becoming more more customizable

Light Beer

looking ahead a bit: this looks promising "Ability to restart/patch individual subsystem"

Light Sabre

@JohnGordan I think bare-metal switches rely more on virtual machines rather than involving customizable software and hardware

Light Beer

you need a controller

Light Beer

i think bare-metal is less cusomizable/configurable.

Light Beer

Just curious: what do you use as a controller for those white boxes?  What about orchestration?  Is it a vendor or a DIY solution?

Light Beer

love this "pizza box form factors" (slide 8)

Light Sabre

I think scalability is one thing this brings -- that's clear from slides 5 & 6

Lightning

@hsweda ("What's the difference between bare-metal and white-box switches?"): I'm guessing bare-metal switches are sans operating system and software, no?

Light Beer

@Hsweda - my guess is that bare-metal is primarily cloud based as opposed to being a hw and sw mix.

Light Beer

sounds like a great approach

Light Sabre
Why 3 layer design .. Spine and leaf should be in two later design
Light Beer

This truly appears to be directed towards developers, while end users and management would most proibably look for WHAT this brings rather tha HOW is is done

Light Beer

What's the difference between bare-metal and white-box switches?

Light Beer

(By the way, for the pure techies here, cap-ex means capital expenditure.)

Light Beer

Cost & Flexibility

Light Beer

I think the biggest challege is to harden the overall solution(White Box + Open Source NOS) to make it comparable to a carrier grade solution

Lightning

Seems CAP EX is higher when you consider licensing software for the box.  Right now, most software seems to be from vendors who also sell hardware, and as a result they inflate software costs, unwilling to canabalize.

Light Beer

If  streaming video, like  YouTube and choking the core network, could degrade the performance of SaaS applications or VoIP systems?

Light Beer

culture around security

Light Beer

Ahhh! Thank you. White box DOES lower cap-ex, but it shouldn't be the only criterion. Got it!

Light Beer
Total return, not only price
Light Beer

cost/resources - to start from the ground up

Light Beer

What's the biggest challenge to your organization in the white box transformation? Skill sets, cost, company culture, or something else?

Blogger

skill set and something else

Light Beer

skill sets and culture

Light Sabre

In this case, the biggest problem iscompany culture, understanding of this new technology

Light Beer

skill set - just learning right now

Light Beer

company culture

Light Beer

skillset and the cultural change

Light Beer

Company culture and cost

Light Beer

Something else --> all of the above

Light Sabre

Something else. Trust.

Light Beer

something else - time

Light Beer
Company culture!
Light Beer

Reply to first listener poll: Biggest challenge is cost.

Light Beer

@SalesAna good one

Lightning

@Liz Thanks - I had to step away for a couple of minutes

Light Sabre

Good questions everyone!

Blogger

Do they make machine learning white box devices?

Light Beer

what slide are we on right now?

Light Sabre

Simplifying the DC architecture to manage both Hardware and Software is essential for Service Providers. Having White Box switching depends on the performance improvements it brings to the legacy devices. What are the KPIs that Linked In looks at concerning Performance ? Does it depend on the chipset ?

Light Beer

Question to Saikrishna K: Who is responsible for the device failures, breaches and general liability, since they is no specific vendor standing behind the device?

Light Beer

*Why are there so few economic players in the computer market with the availability of white box devices?

Light Beer

Why aren't there so few economic players in the computer market with the availability of white box devices?

Light Beer

Hello, sorry about the delay..

Light Beer

Yes, any interoperability challanges?

Light Beer

Great questions @John and @gnean!

Blogger

Question to Saikrishna K: Do these White Box devices play well together, i.e., what is the level of interoperability?

Light Beer

QUESTION: I'm surprised that white box switches don't involve lower capex, because I would have expected off-the-shelf switches to be cheaper than specially built solutions. What accounts for the low difference in price between white box and other solutions? (Or did I misunderstand?)

Light Beer

I should correct myself, Russian synchronised swimming team!

Light Beer

Yes, a great checklist to keep in mind!

Blogger

I like all the points on slide 2...I would say that they can apply to many things ... any industry!

Lightning

Light Beer

White box networking refers to the dissertation help ability to use "generic," off-the-shelf switches and routers within the forwarding plane of a software-defined network (SDN). Consider white box networking and switches as a "blank"

Light Beer

Hello group members!
