Do you see a need to back up your data centers across regions, or is reliability acceptable in a closer back-up architecture (say within 100 km) to minimize latency?

Do you see value in deploying a distributed SDN controller, as envisioned by ONOS, versus separate peer controllers in different domains?

Thanks, Jeff and Kelsey for a great session.

Network Operators need to rethink their strategies

Yes the industry is definately trialling NFV in their environments!

Thanks Jeff on the overview. Well done.

At AT&T, Network Transformation and All IP project has been underway for several years.  Agressively moving into SDN and NFV world.

I was a marketin strategy manager with Alcatel-Lucent from 2006-10.  Back then Alca-Lu started educating service providers tabout migrating their networks to open architecture, and precursors to SDN/NFV.  Also introduced the potential of mobile apps and IOT to provide new channels of monetization.  Nice to see that the conversation has become more urgent and more real.

weather is overcast and waiting for monsoon afternoon rain.

Service Providers need to step up and rethink their entire business, competitors, customer mix, and future threats.

Great presentation, thank you!

I wish to understand more about the migration concern from DC to CORD. I look forward to your next lecture.

NFV for sure but with the careful planning for SLA.

YES, all companies are moving toward NFV.

Abdul Ravoof from Jeddah , KSA

Thanks for the presentation.

Thanks for the presentation.

Thank you very much for the invite!

Thanks for a great class today. Learned a lot!

you are spot on with that comment.

Thanks @Jeff/jab we appreciate you answering these questions! Thanks again for the excellent presentation!

I apologize if I missed any chat questions, I've tried to scroll thru the comments and catch all the ?'s.  Thank you for attending.

jayakd0 you are spot on with that comment.

Some solutions offered promise connectivity to the SP cloud via PC (x86/Intel microprocessor).  Pros and cons to that approach but certainly worth investigating further

@xcbpm In my view there is an awareness issue regarding security. But hearing the major security incidents which have wiped off significant earnings of coprorations, hope everyone will realise the value of security through automated monitoring, analyics and healing at various points in the network!

@Jeff/jab Excellent analogy!

To wrap up my thought on use cases, a favorite analogy is that if Henry Ford focused only on what current needs were at the time (ie use cases), he would have spent his career building a better horse and buggy.    Initial use cases will spur new ideas and other applications

@jeff This is regarding my original question about NID. I interface with a number of NID providers and how they are redesigning the NIDs for NFV/SDN. I don't see a physical device at demarcation disappearing. If there is no demarction at teh customer edge, then which device of customer's would the cloud connect to?

Vritualized CPE concept shifts some or most of the network functions/services from purpose built CPE to the cloud. Therefore avoiding upgrading of the CPE or truckrolls. CPEs today already offer DDOS, Firewalls, etc. Moving these to cloud is doesn't make it new service. More sophisticaed security service - yes maybe. Are customers willing to pay for more security? Other than security what else new can NFV/SDN offer?

@Jeff/jab3241 Thanks so much for presenting today, what a great session to start our Telco Data Center module!

Thanks Jeff for your slides, will listen to your talk offline as some of us had audio streaming/synchronisation problem..have a great day!

Ah, refreshed again and I just got audio in chrome! Thanks everyone!

to the question of Edge DC, I think the IoT Big Data analytics would drive the need to house functionality closer to the edge

There are a number of use cases being fleshed out including bandwidth on demand (BoD), bandwidth calendaring, virtual CPE, layered services on top of that (DDOS protection, firewall, etc).    And most likely a number of use cases that we have not thought about yet

@xcbpm Security is one such new service, vitualised CPE another, hope Jeff will add more to our understanding of new services!

thank you for the presentation!

Thanks Very much Jeff & Kelsey for the presentation; It was interesting hearing it...

Thank all of you, have a nice day

Thanks looking forward to hearing the archive.

@Jeff Listener Q: I understand the opex/capex reduction case for SDN/NFV. But what about the revenue side? What new services can SDN/NFV enable that will generate more or new revenues for carrier/SP?

What is the potential of "edge DCs" especially for UHD broadcasts and Big Data analytics for IoT?

@jayakd0 - I understand the service velocity argument but I see that as a opex/capex argument. Granting that there is incremental revenue due to faster service deployment, I see that as only incremental revenue. Not revenue from new services. Is there a set of services that SDN/NFV can enable that are not depoyed today? Where is the new revenue coming from, if any.

Thanks Jeff appreciate you taking the time to help us out

Minutes does sound much better that waiting weeks.

our SDN will stay a while longer

@xcbom, I look at SDN/NFV as a new paradigm which enables services to be launched in minutes compared to many weeks traditionally for a Telco. So revenue loss can be avoided at the same time, it enables better experimentation of new and innovative services on production networks for quick roll outs!

Hi Jeff, do you see NFV being fully deployed at a telco or a hybrid buid? I feel that network core would still be dedicated hardware for faster switching

@Redacre_Solutions-I agree with @BLeung070 - Verizon is in the press along with AT&T in moving to SDN - as I understand it Verizon has the leader position currently with SDN with trials and implementation with end user customers

Not considering Nov at this time

I understand the opex/capex reduction case for SDN/NFV. But what about the revenue side? What new services can SDN/NFV enable that will generate more or new revenues for carrier/SP?

@BLeung070 Why do you think Verizon will be the first?

Reply to 2nd listener poll: Not considering NFV

Actively implementing NFV

Actively implementing NFV

Telco Data Center how it will be different from Webscale player's data centre? How is the Central Office foot prints reused in a distrubuted data center scenario?

Yes.  Active in the implementation.

Listener poll: Is your organization: Actively implementing NFV? Trialing or testing NFV? Considering NFV? Or not considering NFV?

I think all major service providers will have SDN fully deployed-- will be Verizon is the 1st one .

Actively Implementing NFV

I work for Ciena and we are a global leader in SDN/NFV software.

We are implementing NFV and also testing in some markets

Actively Implementing NFV

trialing and test NFV

Yes - Actively implementing NFV

On the southbound side, did you consider NetConf/Yang as well (in addition to OpenFlow)?

Maybe Jeff could also address the environmental impact of NFV???

I can't hear, but I still wanted to post a question. How will job functions change (or expand) in a virtualized data center?

When do you think all major service providers will have SDN fully deployed? - Who will be first? Verizon / ATT? By when?

@linkedin56268

OpenFlow® is the first standard communications interface defined between the control and forwarding layers of an SDN architecture. OpenFlow® allows direct access to and manipulation of the forwarding plane of network devices such as switches and routers, both physical and virtual (hypervisor-based).

Great questions everyone! Coming up on time for our 2nd listener question shortly, get your questions in

Good afternoon Jeff.  Were you working on SDN and NFV efforts at Sprint? - If someone could type Jeff's reponse via the chat because I don't have audio.

What will replace NID? there needs to be a demarcation device to enable services?

Good afternoon Jeff.  Were you working on SDN and NFV efforts at Sprint?

Would SDN or NFV always be implemented togather to take full benefits ?

I'll repeat my question from last night for convenience's sake: QUESTION: It seems to me that the more virtualized a network, the more complex the control plane has to be in real terms, to manage all that dispersed hardware, no?

apologies for the audio problems everyone -- the archive will be available immediately after the show.

I'm glad I left my question to the speaker on the board last night!

Wouldnt it be better to use ONF definition of SDN and NFV instead of MEF

@JEFF

Do you see QoS a challenge with respect to the IoT environment ?

will listen to archive, have great day!

Missed the "first day of class." Not cool.

audio on internet explorer is working fine

This was my response to the Listener Poll.  I still do not have audio - I'm on chrome and don't have the ability to change right now.

No audio in IE or Chrome for me either.

I thnk it needs to rethink the Strategy

No audio on Firefox either...giving up now

Ist poll, they need to rethink their startegy for IoT

looks like its the archive

Most of them are rethinking their strategies to meet IoT demands, but it will be slow till clariy is there on how IoT will span out.

(I've set up IE to be wide open -- that is, no script blocking -- and no results, unfortunately.)

Friends, doesn't seem to be a browser issue. When more than a certain number of partcipants join the audio streaming, the system doesn't synchronise the latest participants. Hope LR admin will fix this in coming sessions!

AT&T is the only one that I know of exploring SDN/NFV with their Domain 2.0.  Are there other carriers?

have attempted with edge, chrome and firefox no audio,

Glad you guys post the listener poll. Answer: re-think their strategies for ensuring future capacity

No audio. I'll listen to the replay.

It looks I will have to fallback on the archived presentation, too.

Seems we have to listten to audio later on as there is no audio at the moment

(I'm on IE, and no audio either, I'm sorry to say.)

Reply to first listener poll: I don't think network operators are currently prepared to meet IoT demands, provided those demands are beyond simple and occasional telemetry.

Switched to MS Edge and still no audio

Hi everyone, Audio is working on Internet Explorer so please try that browser. The show is recording and the archive will be available immediately after the live show ends.

I believe that many will need to rethink the Strategy Re most customers, some are budgeting for the future, but I find that others just looking to pay the least amount on their IT solution

There is a need to re-think and evaluate

No Audio on Chrome or IE ?

i have logged in with edge, chrome and firefox no audio

still no audio here.  I'll listen to the replay and chat for now

We will meet by increasing capacity as projected.

Most are already rethinking. Looking at robust simplified Layer 2 networks.

Listener poll: Do you think network operators are prepared to meet increased capacity demands from IoT OR do many need to re-think their strategies for ensuring future capacity?

have you tried using IE @ANON ??

Yes, need to increase the capacity. Not just because of IoT but also for increase demands from Video and other MMS

Need to re-think their strategies for ensuring future capacity

same here on edge no audio

Somewhat ready. Will adapt as the traffic grows

still no audio here.  maybe i'll listen to the replay

I agree with National22674; we should re-think strategies to ensure future capacity.

Most are looking forward to meet the capacity demands

Need to rethink their strategy to meet the future demand

I'm not hearing anything in IE.

They need to re-think their strategies for ensuring future capacity

Updating the Flash Player in FireFox.

Try IE as someone already mentioned. Very Clear

Which slide are we on? do the slides move by themselves? they don't seem to be on my end.

Hi everyone. If you are having audio issues please try using Internet Explorer!

There seems to be issues on Chrome and Firefox

Audio seems to be working on Safari (for those Mac users)

No Audio Still after relogin

okay I will try IE no audio on chrome

It looks like I need to reboot the machine. Drastic measures.

(Just found out my system was blocking btrstatic.com for some reason. I presume that is a Blog Talk Radio site. I allowed it but no audio yet.)

The show is recording and some folks are getting audio -- we apologize for the problems and are working on it now. For those who are getting audio, get those questions ready for Jeff!

I can hear audio. Using IE.

Many what have been Tier 1 Service Providers seem like they are exploring selling their physical data centers - i.e. Verizon/AT&T/Century Link --- why do you think that is happening?

listening from Bangaore, India!  no audio, audio player is trying to synchronise as seen from the 3 bands on the left!

LOL! Didn't mean to yell "No"

player attempts to load, but seems locked in start up loop

Signed back in. NO audio though.

Seems a general issue with Audio....if anyone hears , please share

Audio Loud & Clear here in Sunny Boston

Try to log out and log back in.

just signed back in still no audio

I am going to close FireFox and reopen, with the hope getting audio.

I logged out and logged back in and the audio started working!

Hi, Seattle nice sunny day

No audio for me yet. Trying....

It seems like some folks are having audie issues. We are trouble shooting now. Please hang in there.

From Atlanta, it's HOT here

i will sign out then back in

Having trouble with audio here as well (on two separate machines)

some but not all - congrats on completing them all Ahsu001

I have heard a lot about windstream previously. Will be interesting to observe how good(or otherwise) their work really is now.

Hey folks! how many people here have cleared all the Upskill U Certificate courses so far? Ain't it exciting???

How active or otherwise is the reduction of datacentre footrpint for Telcos(thanks to the Increased adoption of the cloud) today??

looking forward to the session

Greetings from the California delegation

Excited to hear from Jeff today!

Hi everyone! Good to see you all hear today, looking forward to this course.

Looking forward to learning more about this topic.

Gaining knowledge is less than an hour away.
