Re: Kickstarting 5G?
http://in.pcmag.com/smartphones/105165/news/verizon-moves-ahead-with-5g-specs

"They created a platform for Verizon's 28/39 GHz fixed wireless access trials, which have been ongoing since last fall. Because they're oriented towards current trials, the standards could be revised before 5G goes live for consumers, something Verizon says it intends to accomplish as early as next year."

OFDM may work for fixed mmwave 5G, but it definitely doesn't work as well for mobile mmwave 5G.

"I think OFDM will be there for lower bands but at higher bands I am not certain and my personal thinking is probably I will not use OFDM, I will use pencil beams which will be non-OFDM. But in reality in lower bands I will probably use OFDM." - Hossein Moiin, Nokia CTO

Kickstarting 5G?
Verizon says that releasing this spec will help vendors develop products. Seems like they are betting on the eventual 5G radio interface being OFDM-based.
