That's certainly true. And I think about this development as being less about software specifically and more about Arris' attempts to expand beyond the world of cable/telco CPE.

I watched Motorola cycle through a number of big initiatives over the years (retail CE, UI software/middleware, home monitoring/automation technology), and each time the company fell back on its CPE sales. Then Arris bought Motorola, and the success of the network and cloud business changed the game somewhat... But even today, CPE makes up an overwhelming percentage of the company's total revenue. 

Bottom line - it's very difficult to pivot.

My only thought is its not quite so simple (though I know that's not what your'e saying) to say Arris is ditching software for hardware.

Even with the products Arris is concentrating on, the line keeps moving towards software,or the cloud
