Based in your lecture it is amazing the potential of IoT networksand the business opportunities they present.

I am particularly interested in the adoption of distributed wireless control systems, how this will be security driven and what system/network architecture will prevail.

Light Beer

Steve your representation of the IoT space in light of current developments was really instructive for me. Jack

Light Beer

Great presentation...very useful info and pointers to further reading. Thanks.

Light Beer

There is huge potential of IOT application in Smart Cities.

Light Beer

Conserving / efficient use of available resources can be realised with help of IoT, as it will provide insight like never before.

Light Beer

Scope of IoT is not just limited to Industries...it includes customers, service providers and much more ...Every one gets a pie! Really interesting time now and ahead.

Light Beer

Listening to Archived lecture ... very good content and clarity in presentation.

Light Beer
Delhi..sunny morning
Light Beer

Sweden, as usual

Light Beer

Thank you Steve for a great overview of industrial side of IoT!

Light Beer

Are there any big differencies in IoT development in different parts of the world? Asia, Europe, Americas?

Light Beer

I believe manufacturing, transportantion and helthcare will benefit the most from IoT in future.

Light Beer

I am wondering about increasing power consumption of such amount of devices. Is that seen as a challenge?

Light Beer

Hello, listening from Sweden, IoT lectures so far were very good!

Light Beer

Industry 4.0 will accelerate adoption of IOT

Light Beer

Hopefully after your enlightening Lecture more Consumers & Industrial Development in the IoT space will become a fact of life today.

Lightning

Without Industrial IoT we can't do anything on the Industrial Manufacturing and Supply Chain side today.Absolutely Nothing!

Lightning

Hi Steve! Industrial IoT is a way of Life for all Enterprises today!

Lightning

Feels like one of those 90-90 days.

Light Beer

Cincinnati,  Sunny and HOT!

Light Beer

Will the presentation start soon?

Light Beer

Thank you, It will be interesting and looking forward to know more about this Technology.

Light Beer

Thanks Steve. Heard the session offline, great talk and a crisp slide pack!

Light Beer

Thank you, @JGoodman.

Light Beer

Thank you Steve! Wonderful lecture

Light Beer

Enjoyed the lecture! Thanks!

Light Beer

Thank you......very good,

Hmuros

Light Beer

Thank you Steve

Lightning

Thank you!!  Most informative lecture.

Light Beer

Thank you for sharing.

Light Beer

Thanks, Steve.

Light Beer

Thank you, @JGoodman. It will be interesting to see how private hospitals are carried along by the combined flow of imposed, economically attractive, and technologically compelling new standards.

Light Beer

If 2G infrastructure is already there with less usage, can IoT utilize 2G instead?

Light Beer

Is the Over-The-Top community also actively involved in IoT?

Light Beer

Especially as more and more hospitals are embracing electronic medical record systems, sometimes even using cloud technology

Light Beer

Potential savings from healthcare applications of IoT, considering the rate of growth of healthcare, is an attractive carrot.

Light Beer

If none exist now, do you forsee the creation of standard IoT platforms (perhaps standardized by industry)?

Light Beer

@JohnGordon great point. Not sure how much that will affect private hospitals, though

Light Beer

Thanks for sharing with us Steve!

Light Beer

But healthcare has a strong motive component from the government, doesn't it? IoT likely will have Uncle Sam behind it.

Light Beer

How about Manufacturing?

Lightning

But this isn't a question just of drug approval and hospital systems: what about the health data of individuals?

Light Beer

Informative presentation. Thanks Mr. Steve Bell.

Light Beer

Do you believe that energy harvesting will become a mainstream energy source for IoT any time soon?

Light Beer

do we have an usecase for deploying IOT in Telecom operational space?

Light Beer
It seems like government run networks have been especially vulnerable to attacks/black hat hacking/hactivism. Are different precautions being implemented (and budgeted for) to protect citizen data and prevent outages?
Light Beer

NSA may already have their tentacles well placed on the IoT grid for "monitoring."

Light Beer

@JGoodman: I believe the restrictions on healthcare data will eventually be managed automatically by software, which will reduce the retarding effect that regulations may otherwise produce. Does that make sense?

Light Beer

What might slow down the impact of IoT in an industry like healthcare, where there are so many restrictions on how data can be used?

Light Beer

Perhaps NSA should be included in the ecosystem of standards, if it isn't already as an indirect influencer.

Light Beer

What do you see as a common revenue driven IoT use case for Telcos?

Light Beer

What are the implications for signaling requirements to accomodate some of the low latency applications such as the connected car appication

Light Beer

Are there any industries that are resistent to IoT, or may move a bit slow to adopt it?

Light Beer

What are unique benefits of cellular IoT (e.g., 4G, 5G) comapred to other alternatives (e.g., LORA)? Thanks.

Light Beer

Steve, How do see IoT services, like e.g. health care, in the light of network reliability? Thinking e.g. about indoor white spots (no-coverage)

Light Beer

Which indutry is ready to invest money in IoT where cellular operators should focus?

Light Beer

Manufacturing, in slide 9, is embedded so deeply in the pyramid, right next to Queen Nefertiti's chamber, it seems.

Light Beer

Coming up on our Q&A...what other questions do you have for Steve?

Blogger

Thank you for the clarification to slide 7.

Light Beer
Though for the poll question, it seems to be something that needs to take both the opportunities, the red tape, investment money available & willingness of industries. Without the willingness & interest - or money - the opportunities are kind of moot
Light Beer

What is more benefical for an IoT device, bandwith or reach?

Light Beer

Healthcare will have the added impetus of governmental incentives to explore the cost-savings of IoT, as well as the potential to improve compliance (both consumer and provider) and insurance feedback.

Light Beer

Entertainment and Utilities would find it easy to embrace probably. Healthcare and Transportation would have to factor in safety and data security to a different level

Light Beer
Poll Response: Healthcare
Light Beer

All of them

Light Sabre

All the above.  You're asking for an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Blogger

Equal and different benefits. manufacturuing/supply has obvious benefits, but agriculture can have serious ones too. Entertainment is a given as people love being connected.

Light Beer

Transport/Logistics and Automotive

Light Beer

Transportation mostly and then Healthcare

Light Beer

healthcare

Light Beer

Transportation as we move to driverless cars

Light Beer

Utilities

Light Beer

Health & Wellness

Light Beer

Health Services

Light Beer

City management or public sector.

Light Beer

Transportation

Light Beer

Heck if I know...

Light Beer

Utilities will benefit the most (monetarily)

Light Beer

utility

Light Beer

Poll answer: Manufacturing and Supply Chain Management

Light Sabre

Healthcare, maybe. But this depends on so much!

Light Beer

transportation

Light Beer

Manufacturing

Lightning

Would you be willing to venture a comparison between the projected computing power of IoT in-device sensing and monitoring modules, and the current typical business-use laptop, tablet, or smartphone? Would they be as smart, smarter, or less smart?

Light Beer
@JGoodman Agreed. Security is only as strong as its end users' understanding of risks and properly mitigating them. All it takes is a little social engineering or a weak password in the chain somewhere to diminish it.
Light Beer

Not sure anything is "quite secure"

Light Beer
It seems that a large part of the value is the information that has been collected. Are there privacy concerns/limitations regarding the data-mining of consumer-based information?
Light Beer

@Steve

With potentially billions of IIoT devices is power consumption/efficiency viewed as a challenge?

Light Beer

I suggest the following book to everyone on the IoT bandwagon:

Ted Koppel's book LIGHTS OUT: A Cyberattack, A Nation Unprepared, Surviving the Aftermath

Light Beer

security: LTE is quite secure.

Light Beer

Hi I am from Kanata Ontario Canada

Light Beer

But isn't wireless more vulnerable to cyber attacks?

Light Beer

Due to the heavy dependency on the "grid" will society be more vulnerable to disruptions, or perhaps make the gap between the "haves" and the "have nots" wider?

Light Beer

thanks for joing @shirleyong !

Light Beer

Hello to all who've recently joined. We're on slide 6.

Light Sabre

Joining from a sunny place - Santa Clara, California.

Light Beer

Another kind of boundary, beside national ones, is the healthcare boundary, which also is a legal consideration. Are there any thoughts about how restrictions by law will be superimposed on the IoT operations?

Light Beer

With this many devices coming on-line, are there any plans on uprgading the network infrastructure?

Light Beer

Great questions, keep them coming!

Blogger
"the IIoT benefits include increased revenues, reduced opex, greater capex utilization, enhanced customer satisfaction, safety, and health, all of which are compelling reasons for investment." Are businesses embracing this mindset, or is there still some resistance?
Light Beer

Are there any safety concerns when IIoT is implemented in manufacturing?

Light Beer

Are there new methods for improving cybersecurity?

Light Beer

HI from Spain!!!

Light Beer

But will IoT be forced to recognize borders by law?

Hello all, anxious to start learning on this class.

Light Beer

Hi all! Glad to see you all back again! Should be a great class today. Looking forward to it.

Lightning

Sorry, all, I meant to say "On slide 7, I'm not sure how bifurcation is happening. It almost looks as IF the depiction...."

Light Beer

Can't wait to hear Steve speak about the impact of industrial IoT today!!

Light Beer

@Kelsey Ziser ("Hi @JohnGordon, good to see you on the chat board!"): Thank you. I really enjoy these chats and lectures. Very helpful.

How's everyone doing today?

Light Sabre

Reminder to go ahead and download the slides from the link above!

Blogger

Greetings all! I nearly missed the presentation today. I thought it was schedule for an hour later :D

Light Sabre

On slide 7, I'm not sure how bifurcation is happening. It almost looks as the depiction is one of complete convergence into 5G around 2020, rather than a bifurcation into high bandwidth and low bandwidth systems. Please correct me.

Light Beer

Hi @awgill, good to see you here today!

WOZA Weekend!!

Light Beer

Hello Everyone!

Light Beer

Hi @JohnGordon, good to see you on the chat board!

Thank you for the slides. Downloaded them.

Light Beer

As you take a look at the slides, start thinking about what questions you would like to ask Steve.

Blogger

Hi everyone! Download Steve's slides from the link above, IIoT & CSPs

Blogger

refreshed and presentation is loaded

Light Beer

Steve has sent his presentation and we are loading it up now, folks!

Lightning

Good afternoon

Light Beer

Users should be able to obtain much better control over company operations with deployment of higher powered IIoT devices.

Light Beer

IIoT should prompt much larger demand for sensor hardware, and for programmers who can create software filters that can cleverly assess sensor input.

Light Beer

I'm sorry about the Verizon guest lecturer's family emergency. May things get better for her family.

Does Steve Bell have any handouts? I expect not, on such short notice. Looking forward to the talk.

Light Beer

Hi All! I just wanted to give you all the heads up that our Verizon guest lecturer had to cancel due to a family emergency today, but we are lucky enough to have our own in-house IoT expert Steve Bell from Heavy Reading lined up to take her place. I'm excited to hear what he has to say. It's going to be great so have your IIoT questions ready for him.

Blogger

Looking forward to the lecture today!

Light Beer

Looking forward to all the offerings through this venue. This educational push with Cisco backing reminds me of the 90's when large area networking was expanding to businesses and Cisco rolled out the free eductational website learning modules regarding thier product offerings and I was working as a sales engineer for Computer City and the info was invaluable to me in getting me up to speed on WAN technologies, protocols etc. Thsi is good stuff.

Light Beer

Hope to see you on the chat boards this afternoon, @Saurav and @batye !

Blogger

should be interesting hope to attend :)

Light Beer

I wonder if there is one industry vertical that is really jumping into IIoT above the others -- and if so, how are they adressing the security challenges?

Lightning

Security is a major concern for all connected devices, how should it be addressed with connected machinery?

Light Sabre

Looking forward to the show tomorrow!

Light Sabre

Hi ! Excited to be here and hope to learn a lot of information.

Light Beer

I am Anxious and thirsty for knowledge on the subject matter.

Light Beer

I will be there for sure, this is getting hot.

Light Beer

Yes, looking forward to it! See you there @ccheng928!

Blogger

Should be good discussion.

Light Beer

I'm especially interested in learning about the food and water safety aspect - curious to see if there is potential with respect to safety regulations, or if it is referring more to tracking the provision side of it.

Light Beer

Don't miss this one, folks! Industrial IoT is changing rapidly.

Light Sabre

@TeleWRTRLiz it certainly could be, and is probably dependent on how well service providers partner to ensure the success of IoT.

Blogger

I totally agree that industrial IoT is going to have a huge impact. I'm almost thinking we could be witnessing what will go down in history books as the digital industrial revolution. What do you all think?
