Interesting course. Thank you.

Light Beer

What kind of contingency plan should be put in place in case automation fails?

Light Beer

A major barrier to Automation is the resistance to change of the organization: its processes, assurance policies and people skills.

Light Beer

Slide 8: A CSP can be selling both applications and network services. In such case, are two different automation solutions required to be implemented by the same CSP?!

Light Beer

Automation is also expected to replace the work done by provisioning teams, thereby leading to operational costs reduction.

Light Beer

Thanks a lot Stefan, Kelsey, very good presentation.

Light Beer

Listening in from Portland Oregon. It is a clear sunny day

Light Beer

@Transmis the lecture is audio only, but there are slides in the "Special Educational Materials" section above the live chat window.

Blogger

any link to video?

Light Beer

@Ravibeneditti - It scolls fine on my phone, but I have an iPhone so it could be the Android, like you said. It could also be a WiFi issue.

Blogger

Ahhh...  This restart upon scroll only happens on my Andriod phone,, not on laptop. I can manage from here, but am wondering if the player is simply not mobile friendly?

Light Beer
Has the ability to scroll back and forth in the archived talk been disabled? Any type of scrolling causes the entire talk to start over!
Light Beer

So glad that this presentation is available in the archive.

Light Beer

Isn't virtualization plug-and-play?

Light Beer

Hi from New York

Light Beer

Listeners, Slide 20: if there is a problem in accessing the link (at the bottom) through "https://", try "http://" instead, it works! --> "Service Orchestration and Network Virtualization: A Lifecycle View", makes the concepts in the SoftBank example more clearer

Light Sabre

@Stefan: Slide 13, wish you had explained "State Convergence" more! Hope there are audit schemes implemented in these architectures to ensure consistency from data corruptions etc.

Light Sabre

Thx Stephen, we really apreciate your advise on proper data modelling at the two layers. Softbank example was indeed useful to apreciate the phylosophy you oulined. Enjoyed your talk!

Light Sabre

@Stefan: your top/bottom layering/separation with good APIs and analysing appl centric vs network centric services differently makes the understanding/apreciation of automation (assesing available tools) better. Thanks for that first level simplification!

Light Sabre

listening offline from Bangalore!

Light Sabre

Thanks Stefan for a good introduction to automation. Which international standards body is overseeing the development of automation for Telco networks?

Light Beer

Thank you for having the archive.  Great introduction to Automation Stefan.

What are your thoughts around Security and Automation?

How does Automation affect the skill level / skill set of Operations Staff?  Does it?

Light Beer

Great to get a Cisco perspective here!

Light Beer
Last of the series.. aga8n attending remotely n offline
Light Beer

i reacall my answer on the Softbank use-case being a mix of app and nw centric. No it is purely network centric in that the "apps" are packet-forwarding/processing apps and can not be treated in the generic way. See my definitions on the slides.

Blogger
@Stefan Thank you for those additional links too!
Light Beer
Wondering if there are certain industries that have embraced this more than others, and if there are any particular industries that would likely see a huge benefit that have been slow to embrace automaton.
Light Beer

Yes, amazing questions, listeners! Thanks so much!

Lightning

thanks @Kelsey and @Stefan for a great lecture!

Lightning

Thank you all, hope you got some ideas out of it :)

Blogger

@Stefan, thank you for the excellent lecture today!! Thanks also to our listeners for the spot-on questions!

Blogger
@jgoodman Glad that made sense! (I haven't had my morning coffee yet, so I never know! Lol!)
Light Beer

Yes, Softbank is a good mix of virtual applications and network services. In the data-center we stitch security functions to the VPN, these functions are virtual applications.

Blogger

@Stefan thanks very much for sharing these links

Light Beer

@Stefan, Thanks for sharing those links! Another listener question: What are some of the reconfigurations/tunings that almost always have to be completed for something to be production-ready?

Blogger

From your prospective - what challenges will the service providers be prepared to handle in the examples shown; for example network traffic issues, routing protocol(s) support, MTU size, etc?

Light Beer

on Monitoring...It is very important to automate monitoring of the service as part of the service provisioning. I have presented thoughts on that "orchestrated assurance". Here are two links:

#2

Blogger

Thank You.  Great insight to help explain to  traditional IT  service architects  that a size fits all VM enrionment  for the network and services virtualization is really not practical. " when you have a hammer every problem looks like a nail."

Light Beer

Ah, it's just that the certificates are off.  Bypassed the security and got it, thanks.

Light Beer

@faryl thanks, that sounds plausible!

Light Beer

the state-convergence algorithm can restore the service bu calculating the diff from desired and render the config

Blogger

@Jgoodman (that's just my personal two cents - I'm not an expert in that field though!)

Light Beer

automated trouble-shooting is a good one!

If you have a proper model of the services in the top-layer and the underpinning resources in the bottom layer, the automation tool can many times fix problems. More then 50% of service problems is wrong configs

Blogger

@Jgoodman - I think that it's a risk to rely completely on automation for security - but by automating security testing, reporting, etc., you can cover more scenarios more effeciently to identify potential gaps & risks.

Light Beer

@Stefan: Is natural language processing generally very helpful in automation, the more sophisticated it gets?

@Stefan: Listener question:

Can automated troubleshooting scripts account for the vast number of possible subjective problems customers can have with their services?

Blogger

Great presentation. Stefan is really visionary

Blogger

Light Sabre

Great presentation. Thanks!

Light Beer

Thank you for the lecture Stefan!

Light Beer

Thank you for the session!

Light Beer

The 4 pillars of orchestration seminar link does not seem to work

Light Beer

What are the challenges (if any) with automating reporting and monitoring tools?

Light Beer

But doesn't totally automated security lead to greater risks??

Light Beer

Thank you very much Stefan! Good philosopie and useful insights.

Light Beer

Are tools such as Chef, TOSCA, Puppet, etc. an emerging market?  Do you anticipate seeing more players/options in that area?

Light Beer

@[email protected] Yes - we had several parallel environments... there were several QA certification stages to certify changes, to make it easier to identify which specific changes were the ones responsible for any bugs that may be introduced.

Light Beer

How many vendors support YANG.today.....? i think only a couple of them...so how can we have truly universal orchestrator

Blogger

Thank you great information.

Light Beer

with customers being able to configure/change their networks more rapidly, what would be the impact on the network for "viral" service requests?

Light Beer

Thanks, great presentation and info.

Light Beer

Thanks very much, Stefan

Light Beer

Thank you, Stefan! The slides were great to help illustrate what you were speaking about too. Very informative.

Light Beer

Is DevOpS mandatory for NFV operation ?

Blogger

faryl so you had parallel environments

Light Beer

cost & time

Light Beer

But we timed our roll-outs of changes around off-market hours and made sure teams were available at market-open for a quick roll-back if something did end up breaking.

Light Beer

Stefan long term do you see sizable ROI on the automation projects you have worked on?

Light Beer
We didn't have any outtages when I worked there - so I guess it was successful! Lol!

Light Beer

What are the biggest barriers to increasing automation in your organization? Are those barriers related to technology, cost, time, or something else?

biggest barrior is the lack of training and awareness

Blogger

time and cost (of time)

Light Beer

complexity of environment

Light Beer

Technology and organization

Light Beer

tech, cost & time

Light Beer

faryl i would expect you faced peak request times in that envronment --did you find the scripts modeled efficiently those types of peaks loads to avoid service issues?

Light Beer

@[email protected] When I worked doing QA at a "well known online trading company", we had a group that focused on automated test cases around load/servers.

(The rest of our testing was manual though!)

Light Beer

faryl have you been successful implementing that:)

Light Beer

Ah - so the data models make it more "plug & play" for the automation options?

Light Beer
[email protected] Good point! (I guess that's where automated load testing of the automation scripts comes in...automation to help automatation!)
Light Beer

I can see how automation could help in terms of services rebooted/restarted – I hadn't thought of that!

Light Sabre

QUESTION: Is the "SoftBank" example in slide 15 an example of both application and network services being sold? (Email security as well as routing and VPN termination.)

Light Beer

faryl I would also expect possible performance issues if not tuned correctly?

Light Beer

It appears that it the automation needs highly customized tuning depending on solutions--is anyone doing this in house or relying on outsourcing?

Light Beer

@[email protected] True. I'm guessing the more granualar the options are, the more potential issues that arrise - depending on the sophistication of the end user.

Light Beer

@maryam it guided me to reset network connections in the house...before I called, I spent a bit of time trying to troubleshoot and could not resolve the issue. The robot on the other end of the phone helped me pretty efficiently.

@faryl agreed, it makes maintainence much, much simpler. Amazon Web Services has autoscaling features that can create or shutdown instances based on workload and health checks.

Light Beer

Does the network centric apps do not need Devops ?

Blogger

What are some of the reconfigurations/tunings that almost always have to be completed for something to be production-ready?

Light Sabre

Maybe natural language processing is generally very helpful in automation, the more sophisticated it gets?

Light Beer

@cheungaryk Same here. The biggest benefit is being able to iniate having services rebooted/restarted as a first level trouble-shooting effort. I wish I could do that with the servers I have my websites hosted on instead of having to go through a help desk ticket each time.

Light Beer

Faryl probably also on how customized the automation is-- I would expect highly complex sollutions will be more challenging to support.

Light Beer

@faryl definitely. but this sounds like a general issue with automated troubleshooting scripts

Light Beer

@JGoodman I guess it depends on the nature of the problem and the competency of the customer? :-)

Light Beer

What are some of the best integrated virtualized cloud services on the market today?

Light Sabre

cheungaryk what worked for you in the end?

Light Beer

I think the general question is whether automated troubleshooting scripts can account for the vast number of possible subjective problems customers can have with their services?

Light Beer

Those automated troubleshooting scripts (T-Mobile) are hit-or-miss for me - it worked for me a few times but sometimes, not helpful.

Light Beer

Good questions! What else would you all like to ask Stefan?

Blogger

How does security integrate into the layers?

Light Beer

Troubleshooting options like AT&T Uverse can be really annoying - especially when customers are a bit more sophisticated.

Light Sabre

@faryl doesn't this kind of automation lead to less ability for customers to overcome problems subjective to their own systems?

Light Beer

@Faisal - Slide 6

Light Beer

@FaisalKhan slides are under the educational materials!

Light Beer

Is this similar to the troubleshooting options AT&T Uverse offers now before having to interact directly with customer service? (It seems to allow the customer to launch automated troubleshooting scripts.)

Light Beer

what challenges do you see in implementation?

Light Beer

Hopefully, cost savings.

Light Beer

Cost savings...and I would imagine a reduction in errors, too

Light Beer

Main automation benefits are cost savings and improved customer perception/experience (e.g. time and reliabilty of service provisioning)

Light Beer

Automation helps to enhance productivity hence reduce cost.

Light Sabre

I've had problems using Chrome on Mac for these presentations, Firefox is a good option.

Light Sabre

You do need established bussiness processes to fit into the new model

Light Beer

Using Chrome (on a Chromebook), no problem with sound.

Light Beer

@Stefan

Can automation also address the tasks specific to the customer´s business?

Light Beer

good question @dfperson!

Lightning

In a world where security is paramount in IT because of the risks, are there opportunities to automate security? Or is it really not worth it?

Light Sabre

Hello from South Africa!

Light Beer

plus is automation provisioning faster than cloud?

Light Beer

@DFPERSON & are automation tools scalable? ie if your enviro grows?

Light Beer

What tasks or processes are typically automated?
