LTE has variants, sure, but they get incorporated into the specification release updates, we're up to Release 13 now, which Huawei is using for its 4.5G gear for instance.

5G doesn't even have a specification yet and there appears to 3 or 4 different contra-pulls on where vendors and operators want to go. (South Korea/US vs. China vs. Europe to put it simplistically.)

Great point on WiFi - I was thinking too narrow (licensed).

LTE has variants though, right? FDD, TDD -- maybe I am nit-picking.

Everyone would benefit from a single, unified approach to 5G specs -- do you think the weight of the industry will lead to that?

LTE in the mobile network. WiFi in the LAN. Both are global standards.
