Great expose of "Press Rooms"
I've covered ONS past five years (since 2012) yet was even invited to Press Room.  I wouldn't have gone anyway since it's almost always a bleak, depressing, empty room with an attendent doing nothing.

Wasn't always that way!  Before smart phones & tablets, the press room often had a couple of PCs with Internet connections you could use and sometimes a fax machine too.  Gone- just like networking/telecom engineering!

Here's my 2016 ONS Summary:  http://viodi.com/2016/03/22/2016-open-networking-summit-open-source-rules-but-many-choices/

Re: All in how you look at it
Actually, at the MIT event, I think it had much more to do with the fact that the press room had a set -- replete with plain paper background and an interview-style set-up -- for video interviews.

Re: All in how you look at it
A crowded press room is often an indicator of the availability of free food and beverages. Was that the case at MIT?

All in how you look at it
I actually prefer the bleak, drab, empty media rooms/press centers.  Sometimes I just need a quiet place where I can recharge (both my devices and my mental state).

The press room at MIT CIO last year was crowded and hopping...effectively making it near useless for my purposes as I tried to transcribe notes and spew out copy.  (It didn't help that it was in a basement.)

Deja view
Yeah, looks familar... from 1999 to the modern day.

Let's see if I can beat that with the one I will have to go to next week to pick up a badge... the thing about the OFC press room, though, is that it is run by a bunch of livewire folks who know what they are doing. The decor and coffee, tho, could be just as grim.
