Re: Build Your Brand in Denver!
It's definitely easier to ask for more money when you know what you're worth and are confident in your value.

I agree, Alison. And, I don't think the younger generation would ever consider being anything but authentic at work. I think earlier generations may have thought they had to "act like a man" or changed how they acted to fit into the "company culture," but hopefully it's less of an issue today.

Re: Build Your Brand in Denver!
That has to be part of any panel or discussion about women's advancement. And any organization that claims it promotes diversity but doesn't provide equal pay for women (or people of color) as white men doing the same job under the same circumstances (same responsibilities, etc.) is only paying lip service to that notion. I do like the idea a handful of companies now have of sharing salaries. It's one of the last walls to come down in this new Millennial-led age and I think, eventually, it'll be something more and more firms do.

Re: Build Your Brand in Denver!
You read my mind, @Sarah. I would have said "All of the above" if it was an option. That said, I think it's sad one option was to be your "real/authentic self." If you can't be yourself at work -- where you spend, what, about one-third to half your time -- where else can you be natural (at least to a point? Not talking about walking around in sweats and flip flops unless you work from home!).

I wonder how/where negotiating for better pay/benefits plays into this. Hard to be taken seriously otherwise...

Build Your Brand in Denver!
An All of the Above option would likely get the most votes, but that's too easy!

We'll discuss why "building your brand" matters, how to do it well and each of these ways in Denver on March 10 at our first WiC networking breakfast of 2016. I hope you will join us there!
