Re: Update from CableLabs
Maybe the "funding for innovation" is the way to go for CableLabs. With 180 million subscribers under the umbrella, there's something in the works that may eventually turn out to be very profitable for all concerned.

Re: Update from CableLabs
Alan -- How much does this have to do with the transition of cable operators to full-fledged CSPs? CableLabs was created and served a strong purpose at a time when operators were focused on video and had franchise monopolies. Things as you know are a lot different now.

Re: Update from CableLabs
I don't really understand where Cable intends to play a huge role. The bandwidth is there, the gear is now there. Not sure I understand where cable sees business opportunities unless it wants to sell VR content itself?

Re: Update from CableLabs
I understand they don't want to highlight it, but at least put three words in there about a "modest staff reduction" or something. Failing to mention it entirely is insulting to the CableLabs blog readers and the people the organization worked with.

Yeah, that was pretty lame, wasn't it? Well, now McKinney is coming forth with some numbers. I'll have more on that in a story later today.

Re: Update from CableLabs
Virtual reality is set to become a hot sector, but I'm not sure when it's really going to hit mass appeal and become a revenue driver for companies. I do think it is smart to get in the game early, but one has to wonder when people will really be using VR headsets on a regular basis. Right now they obviously are not.

Positive spin seems like an understatement, since the blog post doesn't even specifically point out any job cuts (unless I missed it).

Ariella,

Or as I had a CEO once say to the entire company at a meeting...and yes this is a quote:

"We will go hire World Class Engineers, not like the ones we have today."

Re: Update from CableLabs
I assume getting DOCSIS 3.1 finished so quickly utilized a lot of manpower that may no longer be necessary?
