SDN + Convoluted Networks (the type of AI techniques that companies like Facebook are employing).    M2M means a lot of real time, both for ingress data and responsive updates (the meter records temperature and enegy, the servo adjusts the A/C).

SDN allows the network to flex.   But to keep up with all that traffic, there has to be a certain degree of automatic control, I imagine.

This is using Verizon's LTE network rather than a dedicated M2M one, just to clarify. It makes a lot of sense for utilties that can't or don't want to manage the communications side of modernizing their own networks. How do you see SDN coming into play?

Their own M2M
Great way to implement a wide reaching M2M netowrk of their own design...there's no limit to what you can do with metering and then controlling other devices for energy optimization.  What they learn here could apply to many customers if they are employing SDN.
