Why different duration of maternity leaves in different countries?
Eighteen months of maternity leave is pretty good. I don't know about Ericsson but other Scandinavian companies don't offer the same generous policies outside Scandinavia. For example Telenor of Norway only offers 6 months of maternity leave in Pakistan which was even shorter until recently.

Re: Technology for Good
I was also interested to hear that Ericsson has seen so much success in emerging markets that it's considering replicating the model in the US. The challenges here are a bit different, and access is a big problem in a lot of rural areas. Partnerships with broadband providers will be important for it to take off.

Technology for Good
Ericsson's Technology for Good program is pretty groundbreaking, both for what it has done for education in emerging markets, and also encouraging technology use in general. Weidman says she's seen kids go from no exposure to technology to having a good grasp of it -- and enthuasiasm for it -- within six months of the program. I like the idea that these kids could be future recruits for the comms industry.
