Definitely quicker outside the US, Canada for one...

Re: The sky is the limit
But in this case, it is even worse outside the US as regulations take much longer time to be installed.

Kruz, Well, yes, as well. I was wondering about regulations as it's so slow and difficult in the US. -Susan

Re: The sky is the limit
@Susan: it could simply be deployed faster outside the US as internet penetration is lower in emerging market. Facebook is already starting with internet.org at emerging countries.

Re: The sky is the limit
Dan, Five years to a decade would be a time that matches the other developments taking place; an explosion of technological advancement. I believe the FAA is delaying progress. Being cautious is one thing, but being too slow is a different story. Who can afford being slow in today's fast paced world? What about the rest of the world? Do you think Google's developments could find an easier and faster ground elsewhere? -Susan

Re: The sky is the limit
As Google invests billions in "space" programs I wonder if it's not so much about high altitude internet schemes as it is a way to gamble on huge government contracts and subsidies at future dates. Remember, a lot of big companies like Google keep on racking up profits due to government contracts. And Google certainly is well placed to be a leader in that venue.

Re: The sky is the limit
It's very likely we'll see the balloons first. Probably not over the US though.

I would guess that we'll start seeing the first moves in, say, 2-5 years. More widespread in a decade, probably a 20 year process for everything to play out. Particularly with the FAA being so cautious on drones in the US.

Interesting times for sure. Put it all together with the expected Google MVNO and it gets really interesting...

The sky is the limit
Super interesting, Dan.

More than thinking that these projects are not cheap, which is not problem for Google, or Facebook anyway, they let me thinking of all the possibilities the Internet and global communications can have and develop afterwards.

I also wonder how long it will take until it's a reality and if all the red tape could unnecessary delay something that I see as something good.
