If I have to quickly summarize my thoughts after reading your article that would be: Super yay! :D
I have secretly been dreaming about something like this. In the globalized world of today, with many of us needing something like a universal chip, not only for local use, but also for global use when you travel.
The Apple SIM sounds like great news. I watched the announcement on Thursday, but just half of it, so I missed this part. How nice you wrote about it.
As I said below, this will improve carrier services, but for travellers this is excellent news.
I believe carriers will react improving service, customer service, and everything else that they can improve for customer retention. This is not a bad thing.
It generates a wave of competence aiming to be the best carrier offering the best possible service. I see this as a very possitive thing. A smart step from Apple.
Re: A Global TabletI am going to guess that this new SIM card is going to irritate carriers. The wireless providers often get a bad rap because they don't actually offer the cool devices we all use; Samsung and Apple get all the cred for that.
Carriers get stuck with jut providing the "pipes" for these devices. And while I can see how the Apple SIM is going to be great for travel, it's not really too beneficial for the wireless companies.
A Global TabletWhen I read about this on Appleinsider, I thought it was the real killer "app." Obviously, others, especially Samsung, will quickly follow. If I were a globetrotter, I'd use it instead of chancing WiFi
