There are some versions of DNS service which are much more secure and almost never implemented.

The SaaS company I was with had some DoS attacks on our DNS that were 2x our normal load.  We were operating at about 3K lookups/second normally.   But nobody tried to poison our DNS directly (knock on wood).

DNS Security
These are one of the more visible attacks to end customers, and they are not easy to resolve quickly. It really speaks to the need for security baked into the DNS itself.
