There's no doubt that a year ago there was a lot of talk about the potential for replacing expenbsive bespoke hardware with less expensive off-the-shelf IT gear in SDNs but the conversation has shifted more these days to opex savings, especially as many SDNs will be overlay networks for some time to come.

This could be a complex hype cycle...

This is more a reference to Carol's SDN capex story, and the comments by a couple carrier guys that SDN doesn't deliver capex savings. But, in answer to your question (or at least my answer), no, it's definitely not over.
