Re: small, cheap, & fast
So, all the panel agreed that getting the rights squared away to install and deploy small cells had been taking a lot longer than they had initially expected. Suggests that the process is often getting snarled in red tape at the local govt. level.

In which case, the initial cost of the small cell itself might be only a small part of the actual cost of deployment since the carriers are probably spending time and money in going back and forth in filing papers with municipalities.

Might be better to think in terms of total cost of deployment rather than the list price for the small cell.

Not sure I follow -- they just want to get all the devices on hand before they tackle deployment?

Re: Fast, Cheap Small Cell
Good point, Peter. I think the interoperability issue, and how small cells fit into the larger hetnet strategy, is a big reason Verizon stuck with the big guys.

Re: small, cheap, & fast
Given how much of a drag it is to deploy them  (getting zoning rights etc etc) perhaps Verizon -- and others -- see the initial outlay for equipment as just part of the eventual outlay. That's my impression anyway.

Fast, Cheap Small Cell
The fact that VzW also wants to go with incumbent vendors (ALU, Ericsson) for Small Cells also proves the point that they want small cells right now and don't want to take the chance with 3rd party vendors who will not only need to do (and pay for) interop testing - not only initally, but for again and again for every new s/w release that is implemented.

small, cheap, & fast
So is small syonymous with cheap? Verizon wants it that way, it woud appear. Not sure if they're getting their fast request either -- The small cell market has been anything but fast-moving so far. Executives on the panel following Howson's presentation said that they still have big plans for them, but they're pushed back by 9 to 18 months.
