Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Demand for large bandwidth is continuing, although much of it today comes from medi aand content providers, says Les Williams of Telx.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Wholesale panel keeps coming back to the notion of APIs that let more information be shared among connected networks.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Perrin says one carrier exec believes his company could realize a 90% savings in hadrware costs through SDN. Again not surprising how slow vendors are moving--if I was a vendor, I might stop answering the phone for a while.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Gina Nomellini of One Source Networks says enterprises love the flexibility of on-demand services but want the assurance of know their bills won't fluctuate wildly.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Heavy Reading senior analyst Sterling Perrin says survey of top carrier executives found that lower-cost hardware is a main reason why they want SDN. Not surprisingly, same survey found that the top barrier to carrier SDN is that hardware vendors are dragging their feet.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat DWDM is moving from the ROADM era , which still had too many parts in the trnsmission chain, to the coherent era, where the number of parts is greatly reduced.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Currently, we have a decoupled packet optical domain, Ahktar says. The environment is too complex.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Ahktar says in the control plane, IPv6 is already well-established, and Comcast is making progress with SDN, segment routing and PCEP.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Shamim Ahktar, Comcast Network Strategy, says he was intimidated when asked to talk at Ethernet & SDN Expo about SDN. Why? Because so much has already been said. Yet, it is still so early, but he says people like him are under pressure to show incremental progress with SDN projects.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Carriers are driving the current changes, says HR's Jim Hodges - he's basically agreeing with a very long-winded statement/question from the audience.

The idea is that this is one network transformation that won't be derailed.
