Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Can you build carrier-size networks from open source components, or does openness have its limits and proprietary elements their place? Chris Janz, Ciena: "The idea that you can build carrier networks with nothing but COTS hardware and free wire is absurd."

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Tony Kourlas of Alcatel-Lucent says to get maximum benefit of SDN, you need to implement it as a whole, at all layers.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat In the past, of course, packet optical networks were designed based on static traffic maps.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Ciena's Chris Janz says packet optical network design is intersecting with SDN to allow a future in which the packet optical network automatically adapts to dynamic service loads. This is what the OPn test bed Steve Alexander mentioned in his keynote yesterday is all about.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Getting operational issues ironed out will help wholesale deliver the end-to-end quality and visibility it needs, says Ben Edmond of Global Capacity.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat Cable is driving a lot of the Ethernet growth, says Les Williams of Telx.

Re: 10/2-3 Ethernet & SDN Expo (ESDN) Live Chat TDM circuits are declining substantially as Ethernet takes over, especially since DS-3 is now being priced higher than 100 Meg interfaces, says Gina Nomellini of One Source Networks.
