Re: Technicality? 4G is imminent: THe ministry says licences will definitely be issued by year-end. I'm guessing China Mobile will launch in Q1. The other two operatros weren't keen on  LTE-TDD but have been railroaded into it. They'll build out integrated FDD/TDD networks, but would probably prefer to lease from China Mobile (it may happen).

Re: Technicality? I'll bet the 4G rollout will be huge. How soon is that coming? And how many players will there be?

Re: Technicality? The next certain big thing is the 4G rollout and licensing.  That will be huge for China telecoms and vendors everywhere.

The other possible big things are - some mild reform (unlikely) or a crackdown on monopoly abuse and corruption among state-owned companies, including telcos (quite likely).

Re: Technicality? thanks, Robert. So what do you think will happen next on the telecom scene in China?

Re: Technicality? It looks like each operator is expected to hook up with 2 MVNOs. Sixty companies have applied for MVNO licences;  the most likely candidates are probably  the big electronics chains, who have national brands and distribution and online commerce capability.

Here's my most recent post: http://www.electricspeech.com/journal/2013/9/20/telecom-innovation-china-is-not-even-in-the-race.html

Re: Technicality? MVNOs are coming? Interesting. Can you say more, Robert?

Re: Technicality? No, they see it as too important for their control of the internet.  There are some small retail ISPs, and just now they're planning to bring in MVNOs, but that's as far as it goes.

Re: Technicality? To distract the masses from one-party government and corruption? Or to make even more money? Or to beat the West at something else? Take your pick.

Re: Technicality? What would be the motivation to do that? It's not like China needs money.

Re: Technicality? Great piece. Think the Chinese government might relewnt at some point and allow real telecom competition to emerge?
