re: Will Cable's Superboxes Pay Off?

Business case for these boxes are also more than just apps and video. How broadly operators construct the business case will affect timing of adoption. I can see gateways also being gateways to managed services in the home, an area ripe for the picking that has potential to grow ARPU and reduce churn, more so than OTT/IP video/multi-room capabilities which hybrid boxes could enable.

Interesting point about managed services in the home. What sort of services are viable? Some operators are thinking about home security, utility monitoring, and other types of home automation services. These don't necessarily require a hybrid gateway, but when you have a single device platform that can handle video, voice and data on a home network, it raises interesting possibilities.

Even the home networking management piece could score a few bucks. It's sort of like the second coming of CableHome in a way, but with much more complexity. JB
