re: Verizon Says LTE Will Match 3G Footprint in 2013

Well they said Boston & Seattle tech trials are completed. So presumably they could start those if they have data cards etc ready to go.

Depends on the defintiion of summer. Is this by the calender and the Earth's orbit? Could they mean the summer in the Southern Hemisphere? Or are they banking on an Indian summer in October?

Interesting that Verizon is now saying "later this summer or early fall" for friendly trials, they initially said they would hold them in the summer time-frame. Jeff Nelson was insistent that "we haven't slipped" on the webcast itself, does this count as a slip I wonder?

Verizon still looks to be the most aggressive large providers in 4G rollout (other than Sprint). Does this change the picture at all, d'ya think?

They're going to need to match the 3G footprint closely to start so they can offer dual-mode services on data cards. Lewis said that they could start building out in some places that weren't 3G in 2013.

It clarifies it a bit. They're clearly not thinking of this as a pure cellular service. LTE could be a DSL replacement for them in rural areas. They can offer it to users as a mobile extension to FiOS in cities. The kind of coverage they're talking about makes it good for smart grid and M2M apps too.

Is Verizon planning to build the LTE network on the same sites as its 3G network? I wonder to what extent they will do that, given that some think LTE will need many more and much smaller cells than 3G to cover the same area and get the expected performance.

re: Verizon Says LTE Will Match 3G Footprint in 2013

If every 3G macrocell were suddenly magically replaced by a LTE macrocell, there would be gaps given the faster dropoff of data rates and throughput (based on distance from the tower) for LTE vs. 3G/HSPA/+. We absolutely believe that small cell deployments will be a baseline component of LTE roll-outs, as well as an important element in solving related problems prior to LTE's widespread arrival.
