re: The Chinese Are Coming, Says Poll Cisco is only a corporation and wants to safeguard its bankaccount which is understandable. Atleast they still by startups and do some innovative work as far as I know.

You are comparing apples and oranges. Cisco and Huawei (Chinese govt backed) are not the same.

2.) Do they *control* them? Absolutely not. In fact, some of the control that is exercised over forums - notably Cisco's control of the IETF - isn't exactly something that Americans should feel particularly proud of, may I respectfully suggest?

re: The Chinese Are Coming, Says Poll Peter,
(a) Wasn't there a recent push by the Chinese govt for a standard for CDMA2000 or something like that? Has it been finished?
The question is it in an international body?

I do not think so. These guys are trying to enforce control unlike what you say.
(b) Has not the Chinese govt mandated that Intel Centrino chips provide a local WLAN security protocol interface?
What is it if not authority and interference?

Interference is not the same as participation. The Chinese govt should learn that.

The Indians atleast have not done that yet, to their credit. They have no participation in any standards body as far as I know. Simply because they have not had system companies as yet. Wonder how they turn out in the future. God save them if they are the same as the Chinese govt.

I'd respond to this remark, from edgesansonet:

"Ever wonder why all the technical forums and management teams are controlled by white Americans!"

1.) As you've probably figured out by now, I've been spending quite a lot of time researching Huawei and ZTE recently. They *are* active in quite a lot of standards bodies - mainly international rather than American standards bodies.

2.) Do they *control* them? Absolutely not. In fact, some of the control that is exercised over forums - notably Cisco's control of the IETF - isn't exactly something that Americans should feel particularly proud of, may I respectfully suggest?

I'm gonna give an example of how this isn't working for the common good in some cases in a separate post, so that I can give it a more eye-catching subject

re: The Chinese Are Coming, Says Poll I believe in recent past China govt has pushed for
three standards rooted in chinese market - both to
help the local cos in terms on paying royalty to MNC patents and raising the countrys tech profile

1. T-SCDMA (seimens were a partner)
2. EVD
3. Wifi WAPI security std.

I havent tracked status of first two, but Intel
recently (with broadcom) and others have refused to buy into it...backed by the US govt apparently.

http://www.reuters.com/newsArt...

Using EVD, I was reading in EETimes their cutprice
dvd player cos would save around $20 in royalties
to key MNCs like sony and philips who have controlled the technology. but seems like there
is peace on that front now

-----
the catalyst to electronic manufacturing in china
has been taiwan, japan and now korea. without these three in close proximity, a huge chinese business community in far east and their willingness to invest on the mainland..china couldnt have jumpstarted her electronics and fab ambitions. the western MNCs took far less risk and
came later when they were more sure of success.

the middle east, pakistan, myanmar and afghanistan being india's neighbours there is no rich & developed patron nearby to help out with anything :-)

so india has decided to engage with the western economies as the best way up the ladder rather than any attempt at antagonism at this stage.

If you had attended any IETF meet you would not have made this statement. Most of the presentations, new drafts are co-authored by Indians (probably working in US or other countries). Look at the WG chairpersons and you will find a lot of Indians there. Keerti Kompella, Vach Kompella, Rohit Dube, Mukesh Gupta, etc.

As somebody here already stated, new product based companies are opening up in India and it will take some time for India to catch up.

re: The Chinese Are Coming, Says Poll The word should be 'buy' and not 'by'. Sorry for the typo.

re: The Chinese Are Coming, Says Poll Dude, they work for US companies. Please re-read my posting again.

re: The Chinese Are Coming, Says Poll >>As somebody here already stated, new product >>based companies are opening up in India and it >>will take some time for India to catch up.

will be helped by the reverse migration of mid-level indians now taking place since the downturn and the fact that only <= 65k h1 visas going fwd, america is no more a bottomless funnel to suck everyone up. lot of people are choosing to stay
at home and be stable.

I have also heard of very bright indian students who graduated from tier-1 univs here unable to find job during EAD and went back. they cant be sitting idle there! :)

Dude, what gives you the impression that Riverstone Networks is an Indian Managed company? Look at http//www.riverstonenet.com/company/...

and you'll find just one Indian name there. And this holds true for all the companies, that you probably die for (Cisco, Juniper, Microsoft, Sun Microsystems, etc)
