re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135MDoes anyone have a clue, what the Viva5100 and 1050 boxes can actually do? I looked at their datasheets on the web site and for me it is hard to believe that a 100 person startup can actually get that much functionality done in less than 4 years. Hey, come on: every possible interface from DS3 to OC-192 including channelised versions and Ethernets too. Then they claim that they can support ANY protocol (IP, ATM, FR, MPLS, TDM, PPP, ...) on ANY port or channel just like that. An of course all the associated routing and signaling protocols. And of course everything is protected, redundant, hot-swappable, excellent QoS support bla, bla, blaa... And everything done with their own ASIC's. Sure.
The only accurate specs shown do convince me that at least you can fry sausages on it, but can it also make coffee?
re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135MThe cost of marketing to Tellabs will be enornous as Vivace has no customers. I am not sure that he product was tried by any carrier. The edge router market is very crowded so there is no asurance that Tellabs would succeed. Vivace switches are IP switches. These switches offer Frame Relay, Private Line Services, ATM, and Ethernet.

It is not uncommon for equipment vendors, both startups and legacy, to include their entire 3-4 year roadmap in their data sheets. It is Tellabs job so sift through the BS to find out two things:
1.What do they have that works today (or at least soon)? 2.Will anybody spend money on what they have today (versus the roadmap)?
Unfortunately, many aquisitions have been made over the last few years because the customers were excited about what the product would be "some day", and some day never came.
All speculation at this point, however, is just that: speculation. We want an instant answer, but we will have to wait 6-12 months to see if Tellabs has done their homework on this one.
I give them the benefit of the doubt at this point for one simple reason: the crew now in charge at Tellabs was running a startup 18 months ago. One would think they would at least know how the game is played.
re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135M Its seems that according to this article that Mike Birke is no longer actually running Tellabs. The new bosses are the Kennedy/Nulty crew from Occular. I am sure glad I am not a shareholder. Its not clear that the Dynamic Duo have an idea of how to run anything (7% of Q1 revenues came from all new products of which the 6400 was just one).
I am sure that that T-1 crossconnect company understands the important elements of a MPLS Router. Yep, thats an obvious one.
Finally, how is this an Edge box? 320Gb/s for the big box. That seems like Metro Core at least. I guess its not long haul Terrabit? But edge? I guess where edge is for me is different than it is for you.
re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135M Bobby, some advice:
Stick to your geo-political and vulture capital discussion points; at least you are getting a little empathy from the teeming masses with these.
It's obvious you don't have a clue when the discussion even begins to infringe upon any aspect of technology and if you have nothing worthwhile to add, most people will simply assume you just like to see your own words, no matter how banal, in print.

re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135MI didn't want to get in to this thread since I believe people will stay quite negative in the dulldrum and gloom. That being said, I want to identify that Tellabs is taking the right steps here. Ed Kennedy and Greg Nulty are fantastically brilliant. They know the game, they have the contacts, and by george they know the industry. We are not talking about people who sold a company or ran a Successful startup when it was easy. No they Ran and Sold a Startup when the market was is serious trouble. I'll say they both know what it took to get the job done and the people they needed to get the company sold to Tellabs for 355 and some change. (Investors Are still applauding!) Tellabs strategy has to shift they are doing this. Someone mentioned T1 crossconnects and the ability to learn IP edge Routing... Your logic is extremely flawed! Just look at the Horse drawn carriage for example. How many had to start designing a horseless buggy after the invention? They had to divest and get into something new as it came to pass and so must Tellabs, just because its difficult is no reason not to try! Tellabs can be a partnering company to carriers and with their decent reputation they are set to be in that position. Ed's staff are intelligent people, I'm sure they did their due Diligence on the capabilities of the Vivace platforms. Bottom line... strategically this allows Tellabs to get closer to the end-customer in the metro where so many products sell and can allow Tellabs to start aggregating their CABLE/IP play do I hear a DSL play in the background chiming away??? Piped to an ATM edge grooming device? Hmm, the world may never know. Personally It would be a privilege to work for Ed, or Greg they are truly shaping the future of the "New Tellabs" You guys can turn the ship around. Now if you can only improve the Sales force...
re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135M Word in the investment community is that, the remaining few companies around, with even "decent" technology will be picked up. Big comapanies looking to expand their product line would rather pick up these distressed companies than develop stuff from scratch.
re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135MI worked for Tellabs briefly, and I agree with Lightbulb. Tellabs needs to diversify, and buying into Vivace is a decent move. Kennedy seemed to at least understand that there was a need for a new generation of mini-super-crossconnect, so his understanding of the market has GOT to be better than what's-his-name's was.
re: Tellabs Snags Vivace for $135M"Vivace has several MAJOR wins under its belt as a startup; with Tellabs its financial survival is not at stake and that will open many RBOC doors."
Does anyone have any idea what accounts these guys are in, and why they would justify such a large valuation?
I have heard 20-30 M revenue thrown around, but from whom?
