A long time ago a best selling author stated that the funniest letters she received were those from her readers who wrote that they were waiting with "baited" breath for her next book. All she could think about were her readers with worms in their mouths.

And I suppose it is even funnier when a writer uses words he doesn't understand. But I also find it an indication of a lack of competency.

Of course, the correct word is bated, from the Middle English shortening of abate.
