They will become (are?) a single product company, with a me-too VOA. By the way, VOAs are being integrated on planar waveguides. And yes, they are evanescent-field interacting devices.

Quite honestly, guys, why don't we bring back the ruby laser and water-filled tubing as waveguiding structures for optical communications!

The ProtoDel technology doesn't use the old block polishing approach, nor is it a one product company. ProtoDel already has the largest market share of the global market in high quality polarizers, for instance. All you have to do is bother to check their web site to see.

Sounds like side-polishing to me. :)

I never said "block polishing" by the way, I said side-polishing. Wheel polishing with a diamond-slurry gives great results with a nice flat surface parallel to the core and a long interacting region. Been there done that.
