re: Optical Taxonomy Haven't seen one been looking for one showing the food chain and who supplies who from optical equipment and test to active and passive components to subsystems to systems to networks. If I find anything I will let you know....

re: Optical Taxonomy I've added the following vendors since this report went live:

ADC - MSPPs
Cisco - IP Service Switches
Corvis - Optical switching (see message 11) rugger)
Lucent - Optical switching
LuxN - Enterprise/Metro DWDM
Sorrento - Metro DWDM

We're checking into

Turin (see message 15)
VIPSwitch (private message)

If you spot other missing names, let me know - either on this board or on [email protected] We'll continue updating these lists.

re: Optical Taxonomy Atrica (www.atrica.com) should be listed in the "MSPP->Optical Ethernet" category. This company was mentioned in at least two of your previous reports "Metro Optical Ethernet" and
"Top 10 Trends".

re: Optical Taxonomy Peter-

In reviewing your chart, I believe that you are collapsing two distinct feature sets into one - namely that transport will sit as the bottom layer, packet processing will sit as the middle layer, and service creation / management will sit as the top layer. I wouldn't combine the concept of routing (table lookup, etc.) and forwarding with service creation.

re: Optical Taxonomy what an idiotic comment. there are too many people in this field that don't know what they don't know and you've just joined the list

re: Optical Taxonomy peter,

what about teraburst networks and their transparent oxc. why no mention?

re: Optical Taxonomy I am new to this board and just learning about the optical networking industry. I have read numerous articles about several upstart companies. It appears that there is a lot of talk about who's making the largest, fastest, most scalable switch, but are there any true products being shipped by these newbies? And if so, what telecom companies or vendors are buying?

re: Optical Taxonomy Very few private firms are shipping. I think Tellium has shipped. Cisco is shipping the privately developed Cerent 15454, which has been well-received.

re: Optical Taxonomy Purely from an investors point of view, what Semiconductor Manufactures will gain from the growth in in these optical markets. The IC arena can be broken down into the same taxonomy. Their is no one manufacturer that covers all bases, but many to the likes of Applied Micro, Vitesse, and PMC Serria have product solutions ranging from fibre channel to longhaul optical networks. I have found when researching this subject, the information on 'who' is manufacturing semi"s for 'what' equipment provider or network sector, the 'list of customers' of the semi manufactures is somewhat secretive and esoteric! Will Light Reading or anyone consider this as a topic of "Optical Taxonomy" interest?

re: Optical Taxonomy Hey, I think this is great work.

What I'd like further to see, is something like a "vendor map". Draw a large picture with the different segments, put each vendor on it in its place, put a large Light Reading logo on the bottom right, and I'll put it on my wall.

If you won't do it, I will (without your logo of course ...)
