re: Nortel Shows Single-Slice 100GE VF,

Agreed, these are indeed stepping-stones. If nothing better comes along, then yes, even something like this could get deployed (albeit in a limited fashion).

The point I wanted to make is that while each demo gets one step better, we're still a step or two away from the 100G technology solutions that are needed for cost-effective solutions that will take us to volume on 10G line systems.

IMHO single-carrier, coherent PM-QPSK is the way to get there and we need serious players to step up with the cashes & talent investment to make it happen. Does Nortel has a 100G coherent receiver ASIC in the works? Does anyone? Someone will need to pick up the ball and run with it.

re: Nortel Shows Single-Slice 100GE Autodog,

Indeed.... those who have a robust, fully FUNDED and resourced ASIC program going now are the only ones with a chance of making the 100g market work in terms of real deployments for revenue carrying traffic.

To my knowledge there are 3 such programs. Everyone else is just posturing and positioning from a "marketecture" point of view. There may be one other that seriously in the hunt, but at most only one more (I am working to verify this).
